The CLO / GC Assessment Architecture

Aegis emerged from a pattern observation across 70+ General Counsel placements: the technical legal qualifications of a finalist shortlist are usually indistinguishable. Every credible candidate has handled M&A, served as a regulatory point of contact, and carries the bar memberships that screen-out filters demand. The hires that succeeded over five-plus years and the hires that misfired within eighteen months separated on a different axis — one that conventional CV-driven assessment systematically misses. The eight Aegis dimensions encode that axis. They measure how a General Counsel behaves in the rare moments when the legal answer is unclear, when the board wants quick certainty the law cannot provide, when management's preferred course is technically defensible but commercially unwise, when a peer executive's conduct is creating exposure the GC has been informally aware of for months. These are the tests that determine whether an enterprise has bought a senior corporate lawyer or a counsellor capable of strategic board partnership. In half of our CLO placements over the last two years, an Aegis dimension surfaced a concern about an otherwise-favourite candidate that, on follow-up, the client confirmed had appeared in their gut-feel discomfort but had not been articulated.
