The problem this seat exists to solve

The interim director will lead a programme to simplify internal work without weakening essential controls or customer service. The assignment concerns overlapping processes, unnecessary variants, redundant reports and approvals that no longer have a clear purpose. It requires disciplined removal, with evidence that released capacity reaches useful work.

Identify what can stop

Build an inventory from employee experience, process data and management requirements. Trace the origin and current user of recurring activities. Separate statutory, contractual and risk requirements from practices maintained through habit. Where a requirement is genuine, examine whether it can be met with less effort or through information reuse. Validate claims of necessity with the responsible specialist rather than accepting inherited explanations uncritically.

Prioritise opportunities by total effort, operational consequence and reversibility. Test simplifications in controlled settings, monitor unintended effects and obtain necessary approval before removing a material control. Engage teams that depend on an output so that apparent local savings do not create greater work elsewhere.

Deliver the changes

Lead work to retire reports, consolidate variants and reduce repeated data entry. Ensure technology configurations and guidance change with the decision; an announcement alone is insufficient. Maintain a visible record of what has stopped and why, including conditions justifying reinstatement.

Work with finance and operational leaders to determine how released capacity will be used. Avoid claiming cash savings where the outcome is improved responsiveness or resilience. Manage approved programme resources and escalate changes affecting material obligations, workforce arrangements or enterprise standards. Make remaining workload visible so that simplification does not become an excuse for unsupported resource reductions.

The judgement needed to remove work responsibly

Applicants should demonstrate operational leadership and implemented simplification in complex organisations. They must challenge familiar activities while recognising why some apparently inefficient checks are necessary. Evidence should include an unsuccessful simplification or unintended consequence and its correction.

At handover, the business should retain a modest mechanism for challenging new administrative demands. Success means reduced avoidable effort, stable control outcomes and demonstrable use of released capacity. Employees should have clearer priorities and fewer tasks whose purpose no one can explain or whose output no one uses.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Norway usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Norway
A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a residence permit. Executive roles for non-EEA nationals do.
