Interim Director of Process Ownership and Controls

The problem this seat exists to solve

The director will establish accountable ownership for enterprise processes where responsibilities are dispersed across functions. The remit combines operating improvement with control design. It seeks to remove unnecessary variation while making important checks dependable and visible. The assignment requires implemented changes in how work is performed, monitored and corrected.

Put ownership around recurring work

Choose the right starting points

Prioritise processes using customer impact, recurring failure, financial exposure and management effort. Map actual workflows, including manual reconciliations and unofficial workarounds. Identify duplicated control activities, missing evidence and defects that no leader has authority to resolve end to end. Confirm who relies on each output before proposing its removal.

Build the ownership arrangement

Appoint and equip process owners through the agreed executive process. Define their decision scope, relationship with functional managers and access to information. Establish standards specifying required outcomes while allowing justified operational differences. A process owner should improve the workflow without becoming another approval layer for every transaction.

Oversee redesign pilots, resolve implementation dependencies and ensure revised procedures are understood. Work with risk and assurance functions so that controls remain proportionate and independent review is preserved. Automation should follow a clear process decision and include exception handling and failure recovery. Changes affecting formal policy or material obligations require the appropriate authorised approval.

Assessing the incoming process leader

Applicants should show cross-functional process leadership, with examples of improving performance and control reliability together. They need sufficient financial and risk literacy to challenge weak evidence, alongside the practical ability to work with frontline teams. Familiarity with process methods is useful, but demonstrated judgement matters more than certification. Applications should explain how a redesign was maintained after initial sponsorship weakened.

Evidence that ownership has become real

The organisation should retain a credible ownership structure, accessible standards and a mechanism for learning from defects. Measures should include rework, completion time, exception quality and recurring control failures. Improvements must survive routine personnel changes and periods of high demand. Completion means operating teams can identify, correct and prevent process failures without relying on a temporary central intervention or an expanding administrative apparatus.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Norway usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Norway
A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a residence permit. Executive roles for non-EEA nationals do.
