The problem this seat exists to solve
The interim head will take executive control of a transformation portfolio whose commitments must be reconciled with available people, funding and operational capacity. The task is to create a credible delivery system. Programmes will be assessed on the decisions and outcomes they enable, including the cost of continuing work that no longer has a defensible purpose.
Restore a portfolio that can be delivered
Establish the true position
Reconstruct the portfolio using delivery evidence, contractual obligations, resource allocations and business ownership. Identify projects that share hidden dependencies or compete for the same specialists. Reconcile claimed benefits with operating budgets and distinguish sunk cost from remaining investment. Surface commitments that cannot be changed locally and prepare timely decisions for the proper authority.
Make the trade-offs executable
Recommend and implement an agreed sequence of continuation, redesign, pause or closure. Protect critical service obligations while removing work that exceeds capacity. For retained initiatives, establish a named benefit owner, realistic resource commitment, decision calendar and explicit conditions for further funding. Ensure that discontinued work actually releases resources.
The interim head will chair portfolio delivery reviews, resolve cross-programme conflicts within delegated authority and escalate choices requiring executive or board approval. Progress reporting must show movement in business outcomes and remaining uncertainty. Financial adjustments and contractual changes require the relevant authorised owners. Teams must receive clear explanations of decisions that change their commitments.
Candidate evidence
Applicants should provide examples of recovering complex portfolios where respected sponsors disagreed about priorities. Experience closing initiatives responsibly is as relevant as experience completing them. The role requires the ability to interrogate schedules, benefit cases and capacity models while maintaining constructive relationships with delivery teams.
An honest exit position
At handover, leaders should be able to explain why each active initiative exists, what it consumes and what would cause its reconsideration. The permanent owner must inherit a manageable cadence, reliable data and a documented method for admitting new demand. Success includes fewer simultaneous commitments and more dependable delivery, even when the revised plan is less ambitious than the original narrative.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Norway usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in Norway
- A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a residence permit. Executive roles for non-EEA nationals do.
