Advisor on Technology Supplier Concentration

Enterprise technology and AI organisation in Kenya

The problem this seat exists to solve

The advisor will evaluate concentration and substitutability across critical technology suppliers. The engagement covers the business consequences of provider failure, service deterioration or loss of access, including dependencies hidden in subcontracting and common platforms. The purpose is to recommend proportionate actions that improve control without creating unnecessary operational complexity.

Map the service, not just the contract

Trace essential business services to their supporting providers, specialist skills and shared infrastructure. Identify where several apparently separate suppliers rely on the same underlying capability. Assess the practical ability to replace a service, including data extraction, configuration knowledge, transition time and internal capacity.

Review contractual protections with qualified advisers and compare them with what operations can execute. A termination clause does not establish an exit capability, and a service credit may offer little protection against a severe interruption. Examine whether the organisation retains enough knowledge to challenge providers and manage a transition.

A prioritised set of choices

Develop options for reducing concentration, improving assurance, strengthening internal capability or accepting a dependency explicitly. Compare the cost and complexity of each option with the exposure it addresses. Where alternative sourcing is recommended, identify the conditions under which it would provide meaningful resilience rather than duplicate the same risk.

Use scenarios to test management decisions under supplier stress. Recommend practical exercises for the most consequential assumptions and a governance route for monitoring changes in dependency over time. The advisor will not select vendors, negotiate awards or certify continuity arrangements.

Qualifications and independence

Candidates should demonstrate technology sourcing, operational resilience or supplier-risk experience with responsibility beyond contract administration. They must explain a case where an apparent alternative proved unusable and how the strategy changed. Commercial relationships with relevant suppliers must be disclosed before the engagement begins.

What leadership should be able to decide

The final output must identify the dependencies that warrant action now, those requiring better evidence and those that can reasonably remain. Success means management understands both the limits of contractual protection and the operating work needed to retain options. The recommendations should be affordable to maintain and assigned to owners who can act as services, providers and business priorities evolve.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement

No office of director, and no appointment formalities.

An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Kenya. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.

On this brief
Independence
Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
