The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will lead the operational arrangements that connect community services with diagnostic, specialist and hospital care. The assignment addresses lost handoffs, unclear escalation and patients who cannot complete the next step in a care pathway. It requires attention to transport, communication, appointment availability and the information receiving teams need.
A completed referral is more than a form sent
Follow the patient journey
Trace representative referrals from the decision to refer through attendance and feedback to the originating service. Identify where patients encounter delay, repeat assessment or uncertainty about where to go. Work with authorised clinical leaders to distinguish operational failures from clinical prioritisation decisions and to agree the escalation routes for urgent concerns.
Own the coordination process
Within the delegated remit, establish referral tracking, responsibility for follow-up and working arrangements with receiving services. Ensure teams can identify referrals that have stalled and know who should act. Design the process for the available communications infrastructure rather than assuming all patients or facilities can use the same digital channel.
Review the administrative burden on clinical staff and the support needed to keep information accurate. Where referral capacity is constrained, make the constraint visible to service leaders with options for scheduling, allocation or service redesign. Do not allow a new tracking process to imply that capacity has been created where it has not.
Professional fit
Candidates require healthcare operations or care-coordination leadership with experience across organisational boundaries. They should understand the practical barriers faced by patients in resource-constrained settings and be able to work with clinical professionals, administrators and community teams. Clinical qualifications can be useful but are not a substitute for operational delivery experience; local clinical authorisation is required for any separately agreed clinical duties.
Leave a functioning pathway
The engagement should establish clear referral ownership, reliable feedback and an agreed method for reviewing delays. Assess performance through completed access to appropriate care, not simply referral volumes. Handover must identify unresolved capacity gaps and the decisions required to address them. Clinical referral criteria and treatment decisions remain with authorised practitioners, while the director is accountable for the operating system that supports safe, timely coordination.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Kenya usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in Kenya
- A non-resident director attending board meetings travels on a business visa. Executive and resident roles require a work permit.

The seat does not act as the advocate of one stakeholder outside the board's collective responsibilities.
Interim Chief Supply Chain and Operations Officer — Renewal
Kenya·Energy & Utilities
Multinational subsidiary — energy and utility services organisation
Separate scorecards usually govern quality, capacity and cost, so the three are decided apart. For 12 months, an interim chief officer for supply chain and operations must make them one decision, taken at the operating front line, in an energy and utility services company that belongs to a multinational group. The role reports to the Country Managing Director.
