Interim Country General Manager — Operating Readiness

General management organisation in Kenya

The problem this seat exists to solve

Take executive responsibility for establishing the operating conditions required to deliver a country business plan. The remit connects commercial commitments with people, local suppliers, customer service, financial control and management reporting. Success requires a business that can fulfil its promises, rather than a launch supported mainly by central teams and individual improvisation.

Leadership for a country operation that can fulfil its promises

Review the proposed offer and identify the capabilities needed to sell, deliver, collect and resolve complaints. Test the assumptions about demand and local execution separately. A credible market opportunity does not remove the need to demonstrate that the delivery model can work at an acceptable cost.

Applicants should have led a country operation, business unit or comparable profit-and-loss responsibility. Demonstrate experience translating a market plan into a dependable operating model, including the correction of an assumption that proved unrealistic after launch.

Candidates must be comfortable working across commercial, finance and operational disciplines. Experience in the relevant regional business environment is valuable, but relationships alone will not substitute for evidence of delivery. Explain how you decided when an operation was ready to accept additional customer commitments and what you did when growth exceeded support capacity.

Prove readiness before making expansion commitments

Set the initial operating priorities, delegate responsibilities and establish the management cadence. Confirm that local staffing and supplier arrangements cover the work actually required, including exceptions and after-sales obligations. Sequence growth against service capacity and cash availability. Bring investment or contractual decisions outside delegation to the authorised sponsor with a clear recommendation.

Work with finance and relevant professional advisers to ensure that reporting, employment arrangements and local operating obligations are addressed by competent owners. The general manager is responsible for coordination and execution, while specialist interpretations remain with the appropriate qualified functions.

Establish a self-sufficient management team

Leave an accountable local leadership team, a realistic budget and a clear view of unit economics. Establish escalation routes for customer, cash and supplier problems before central intervention becomes the default response.

The handover should distinguish proven capabilities from assumptions still being tested. Performance will be judged through reliable fulfilment, timely cash collection and evidence that country leaders can make routine decisions within their authority. Revenue growth is relevant only when its operating and financial consequences remain understood.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Kenya usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Kenya
A non-resident director attending board meetings travels on a business visa. Executive and resident roles require a work permit.
