Commodity Collateral Incident Review Adviser

Commodity credit and warehousing organisation in India

The problem this seat exists to solve

Candidates should bring substantial experience in collateral management, commodity credit operations or assurance over inventory-backed lending. They need evidence of conducting difficult fact-finding work, maintaining independence and writing findings that executives can act on. Strong interviewing and analytical skills are required alongside sensitivity to confidentiality and fair treatment of staff.

Establish what happened and what must change

This adviser will conduct a scoped review of weaknesses in commodity collateral controls and recommend corrective action. The work may address unexplained stock differences, release failures or inconsistent supporting records. The engagement is an independent operational and credit review, not a legal investigation, statutory audit or determination of individual culpability.

The adviser must first agree the questions, evidence boundaries and reporting route with the commissioning authority. Records should be preserved and evaluated with clear distinctions between verified facts, conflicting accounts and unresolved hypotheses. Where potential misconduct or legal issues emerge, the adviser will refer them through the agreed process rather than expand the mandate informally.

Follow the chain of control

Review work will trace purchase information, receipt, stock recording, valuation, financing and release. Interviews should test how the process operated in practice, including workarounds that may have become normal. The adviser will compare system permissions and documented authorities with the people actually making decisions.

Prevention, detection and response are different remedies

Root-cause analysis must look beyond the final error. Incentives, staffing, provider oversight, data delays and unclear contractual responsibilities may all have contributed. Recommendations should identify which controls would have prevented the problem, which would have detected it earlier and which only improve the response after discovery.

The adviser will help management prioritise immediate containment and longer-term repair, with attention to customer continuity and the cost of increased verification. Recommendations must not require the business to claim certainty where stock, title or historical records cannot be reconstructed reliably.

Report to the commissioning body

The final report should include an evidence-based chronology, affected control points, quantified exposure where supportable and a prioritised remediation plan. Management retains responsibility for disciplinary decisions, customer settlements, accounting treatment and implementation.

The engagement is complete when the commissioning body can understand the failure without relying on a simplified narrative of individual error, and when proposed actions have owners, validation criteria and a credible route to confirming that the same weakness has not remained elsewhere in the operation.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement

No office of director, and no appointment formalities.

An advisory engagement creates no directorship in India. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.

On this brief
Independence
Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
