The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will challenge proposals to invest additional resources in a business recovery. The board needs to distinguish expenditure that materially improves the chance of a viable outcome from spending that merely extends an unresolved problem. This requires general-management judgement as well as financial literacy.
Recovery spending needs its own investment logic
The role is a full board appointment. It does not authorise the director to run the recovery, negotiate financing or approve expenditure individually.
Examine what the next commitment buys
Require management to explain which uncertainty an investment resolves, which capability it creates and how its effect will be observed. Compare the proposed course with staged, narrower or alternative actions. Ask whether the business has the capacity to use the resources effectively and what happens if the expected improvement arrives later than planned.
Challenge milestones that measure effort rather than evidence of viability. A system launch, hiring round or sales campaign may be completed without changing the underlying economics. The director should help the board define decision points that connect activity to customer, operating and cash outcomes.
Experience of difficult continuation decisions
Candidates should have senior enterprise leadership or board experience through underperformance and recovery. They need evidence of allocating scarce resources, revising a recovery plan or deciding that further investment was no longer justified. The ability to explain both successful and unsuccessful decisions is important.
Applicants must be comfortable evaluating incomplete information without either demanding impossible certainty or accepting unsupported optimism. Experience in the specific operating sector will be assessed separately; the core requirement is credible judgement about enterprise viability and execution.
Follow the evidence as it changes
Review progress against the assumptions that justified the investment. Ask whether new information strengthens or weakens the case, and whether management is reporting setbacks consistently. Ensure material changes in scope, funding or expected outcomes return to the appropriate decision body.
Appointment-specific eligibility, independence and conflicts will be considered. The director will participate in collective judgement and support timely decisions, including uncomfortable ones. Success is a board that can explain why it is continuing, changing or stopping a recovery investment, with clear evidence and explicit acceptance of the risks remaining. Persistence should be a reasoned decision, not the default consequence of previous commitments.
