Commodity credit and warehousing organisation in India

The problem this seat exists to solve

The final output will include a market assessment, product boundaries, illustrative transaction economics and a staged implementation option. It should identify what must be learned through a limited pilot and what evidence would justify expansion or stopping.

The decision the engagement must support

The adviser will assess a proposed commodity finance expansion and recommend whether to proceed, narrow the proposition or defer investment. The scope combines commercial strategy with the practical controls required for inventory-backed credit. It is an advisory engagement; management retains ownership of strategy, lending approvals and commitments to customers or partners.

Test the market before designing the product

The analysis should begin with customer financing needs across the commodity cycle. Working-capital gaps may arise at purchase, storage, processing or sale, and each stage has different repayment evidence. The adviser will identify where the proposed service creates value that customers are willing to pay for, rather than assuming demand follows from an unmet funding requirement.

A proposition with explicit limits

Recommendations must define suitable customer segments, eligible commodity characteristics and the circumstances in which the product should not be offered. They should address the availability of dependable warehouse providers, inspection capacity, market pricing data and liquidation channels. Weakness in any of these may change the commercial opportunity materially.

The adviser will develop alternative operating models and compare their costs, capital needs and control implications. A partnership-led model may reduce fixed investment but introduce reliance on third parties. A more controlled model may improve visibility while increasing the break-even volume. These tradeoffs should be explained using transparent assumptions.

Stakeholder discussions will include commercial, credit, treasury and operations leaders. External market conversations, if authorised, must avoid representing the proposition as approved or making binding offers. Legal, regulatory and tax questions should be referred to qualified specialists and recorded as conditions to any recommendation.

Commercial and credit expertise

Candidates should demonstrate experience in commodity finance strategy, product development or commercial credit leadership. They need the ability to challenge optimistic volume forecasts while understanding customer buying decisions and competitive alternatives. Practical familiarity with collateral operations is essential to avoid a proposition that works only in a financial model.

Success is a management decision grounded in the relationship between demand, return and controllable risk. The adviser should leave behind an honest account of uncertainty, including assumptions that remain untested and dependencies that the organisation cannot resolve on its own.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement

No office of director, and no appointment formalities.

An advisory engagement creates no directorship in India. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.

On this brief
Independence
Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
