Interim Chief Executive — Cash-Constrained Business Recovery

The problem this seat exists to solve

The interim chief executive will lead recovery where financial capacity constrains the choices available to the business. The role requires close partnership with finance but cannot be delegated to a cash-reporting exercise. Commercial, operating and leadership decisions must be assessed for their effect on both immediate continuity and future viability.

Cash discipline is an enterprise responsibility

Establish a reliable view of available cash, obligations, customer commitments and operating requirements. Identify decisions that protect essential continuity and those that can release resources without causing greater damage later. Agree the board's priorities and the executive's delegated authority at the outset.

Decisions the interim will own

Lead the executive team in prioritising expenditure, resolving working-capital obstacles and adjusting business activity to available capacity. Challenge unprofitable commitments and stalled decisions that consume cash. Ensure customer and supplier discussions are based on commitments the business can honour and that material settlements or financing matters receive the required approval.

Maintain a rolling operating view that connects cash with demand, delivery and staffing. Make trade-offs explicit: delaying maintenance, reducing service or cutting capability may improve the immediate balance while weakening recovery prospects. The leader must distinguish a necessary temporary measure from a decision that undermines the enterprise.

Qualified candidates

Applicants should have led a business through significant financial constraint with genuine enterprise accountability. They need strong financial literacy, evidence of operating decisions under pressure and the ability to work constructively with boards and finance leaders. Specialist restructuring knowledge is valuable but does not replace general-management capability.

Candidates should explain how they retained essential customers and people while making difficult changes. The ability to communicate uncertainty honestly, avoid unsupported promises and maintain a disciplined decision process is essential. Sector expertise will be assessed against the business context.

The test of recovery

Progress should be visible in reliable cash information, fulfilled commitments and a credible route to a sustainable operating position. The interim chief executive will leave clear responsibilities and a handover that identifies unresolved risks, required decisions and assumptions still being tested. Success is not achieved by deferring every difficult obligation beyond the assignment. It requires evidence that the business can meet a realistic set of commitments and that the board understands the choices still ahead.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in India usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in India
A non-executive director attending board meetings travels on a business visa. An executive or whole-time role requires an employment visa.

Independent Director — Turnaround Investment and Milestone Discipline

India·Business Services & Diversified

The director will challenge proposals to invest additional resources in a business recovery. This requires general-management judgement as well as financial literacy.
