Board Director — Enterprise Simplification and Recovery

Enterprise turnaround organisation in India

The problem this seat exists to solve

The director will help the board evaluate simplification as part of enterprise recovery. Complexity can accumulate through overlapping offers, duplicated responsibilities, unprofitable activities and decisions that no longer have a clear owner. The board needs to know which complexity is necessary and which consumes capacity without contributing enough value.

What should the business stop doing?

This is a non-executive seat for an experienced enterprise leader. The director will contribute to strategy, financial oversight and risk while leaving operating design and implementation with management.

Assess the consequences before endorsing reduction

Challenge the evidence behind proposals to consolidate, withdraw, outsource or standardise activities. Examine customer obligations, employee capability, transition costs and dependencies on other parts of the business. Ask whether a proposed reduction actually removes cost or merely transfers it elsewhere.

Review the economic and strategic reasons for retaining activities that appear weak in current reporting. Some may support essential relationships or capabilities; others may survive because ownership of the decision is unclear. The director should help the board distinguish those cases rather than apply a uniform margin threshold without context.

Qualified candidates will have made these choices

Applicants need senior general-management experience involving portfolio or operating-model simplification. They should demonstrate enterprise accountability and the ability to explain the operational consequences of financial choices. Evidence of managing a difficult withdrawal, consolidation or redesign is valuable, including what was learned when expected savings did not materialise.

Candidates must be financially literate, independent and able to challenge both the case for change and the reasons offered for preserving existing arrangements. Sector expertise will be considered against the specific business; broad turnaround claims alone are insufficient.

Keep accountability after approval

Require management to define benefits, transition protections and conditions for reconsideration. Review whether simplification improves decision speed and performance or simply redraws the organisation chart. Follow material customer, service and capability risks through the transition.

Appointment-specific eligibility, independence and conflicts will be assessed. The director will not direct individual restructuring actions or act as an executive sponsor outside the board's arrangements. Success is a clearer enterprise with a defensible scope, credible implementation and evidence that removed complexity has released useful capacity rather than weakened the foundations of future performance.
