Enterprise turnaround organisation in India
The problem this seat exists to solve
This director will challenge the logic, feasibility and governance of enterprise turnaround plans. The seat is for an experienced general manager able to distinguish a credible recovery path from a collection of savings initiatives or optimistic commercial assumptions. It carries full collective board responsibilities and no executive mandate to run the turnaround personally.
The board must know which recovery it is approving
Qualifications at the centre of the role
Applicants should have led a business through material underperformance with responsibility for financial and operating outcomes. They need evidence of difficult trade-offs involving customers, resources, leadership or business scope. Experience should show what changed, which assumptions proved wrong and how the plan was adapted. A strong candidate can move from executive problem-solving to independent oversight without creating a parallel management structure.
Test the recovery thesis
Require management to explain the causes of underperformance and the evidence supporting the proposed response. Examine whether the plan addresses those causes or only improves short-term indicators. Challenge dependencies on funding, customer retention, employee capacity and capabilities that are not yet established.
Assess the sequence of actions and the time available before liquidity or operational pressure narrows options. Ask which measures would be reversible, which would permanently change the business and what alternatives were considered. Recovery plans should make clear what must be protected as well as what must change.
Hold the plan and the leadership to account
Review progress against operating and financial evidence, not merely completion of activities. Challenge repeated explanation changes and ensure material departures return to the board for a decision. Evaluate whether executive authority, incentives and capacity are sufficient for the commitments made.
The director should support constructive challenge of leadership while recognising the board's own responsibility for priorities and resources. An inadequate mandate cannot be repaired by demanding more effort from executives.
The contribution expected
Success means a better evidenced recovery strategy, timely board decisions and transparent accountability for results. Appointment-specific eligibility, independence and conflicts will be assessed. Management retains operating authority. The director will participate in collective judgement and follow material conditions through to closure, helping the board recognise when persistence remains justified and when the underlying recovery thesis requires reconsideration.
