Interim Transformation Executive — Scale

The problem this seat exists to solve

Settling the portfolio choices of a venture-funded asset manager, and then putting its transformation into a workable order, is an 18-month assignment for an Interim Transformation Executive who answers to the Regional President.

Choices a budget round will not settle

Fund ranges tend to grow by addition. A new strategy launches with a sponsor, a seed investor and a confident flows forecast; very few are ever retired on the same terms. Budget rounds are poor at resolving this, because the people who would have to close a product are usually the people who built it. An interim executive with genuine authority can do what a planning cycle cannot: look at the range, the research bench and the distribution effort as one portfolio, and decide what it should become.

The Interim Transformation Executive reports to the Regional President and holds that authority for 18 months. The task has two halves: settle the portfolio choices, then sequence the transformation so the business is never asked to change everything at once.

Rulings this seat can make

Executive authority, not counsel, comes with the seat. With the Regional President you will draw the line between the calls a fund or desk head can make alone and the calls that must come to you. You will set the evidence that any request for money, headcount or a new control must carry. Each product launch, platform project and distribution push you inherit gets a ruling from you: carry on, hold or close. A proposal that would leave a fund board or a sister desk absorbing a loss it never signed up for goes no further. A spending case gets no money until it names the portfolio managers or client teams who will actually work differently, the systems and people it leans on, and what the firm loses if it disappoints. The leadership structure is yours to approve; when investment and distribution heads disagree you settle it, and you fix how regularly the board learns what has moved and what is still undecided.

Order matters more than ambition

In fund management the sequence of a transformation often decides whether it survives. Merging two strategies before distribution has a story for the clients affected loses assets; rebuilding the operating platform in the middle of a reporting cycle loses the confidence of fund boards and auditors. Sound sequencing protects the investment process first, the client experience second and the internal efficiency case last. A programme office helps only if it reports what is genuinely late rather than what is comfortable to say.

How the 18 months should read

The first ninety days should leave the Regional President holding an agreed set of portfolio rules: which calls sit with local heads, which come upward, and the standard of evidence a capital or capacity request has to meet. Around month nine every transformation commitment you inherited should carry a ruling, and each one that survives should answer to a single accountable person rather than a committee. By month 18 the sequence, the route for raising problems and the board reporting rhythm should all run through the leadership team, without needing you in the room to make them work.

A record that has survived a pivot

The businesses you have run were no smaller than $570 million in revenue and 800 people, spread over five or more countries, and in them you led a platform pivot, a cost transformation and a turnaround. The appointment draws on strategy formation at level 4, and on PMO governance, change adoption and the value case at level 3. Somewhere in your history is a funding request you refused because nobody could name who would adopt the change or what the downside was, followed by the harder work of rebuilding the capability that request had been meant to buy. You can put a disputed downside to a senior executive without diluting it. Closing a strategy will not hang on sign-off from every market head, and what follows stays yours to answer for across all 18 months.

A Regional President, a Chair, a committee

It starts in week one with the Regional President, in a confidential conversation over video; the subject is the authority the seat carries and how you would use it. A week later, in week two, you and the Board Chair take a live case apart together. The third week brings you into a room with the executive committee, the people whose commitments your rulings will touch. Whatever the stage, you will hear how it went, in writing, inside four working days.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Switzerland usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Switzerland
A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a residence permit. Executive roles do, and non-EU/EFTA nationals face a quota system.
