The problem this seat exists to solve
The advisor will help leadership decide how a hotel should trade while renovation or substantial maintenance is undertaken. The remit concerns commercial and operating choices: which services remain available, what can be promised and how disruption should shape demand and pricing decisions. Technical construction and safety responsibilities remain with the appropriately qualified parties.
Protect the guest promise during physical change
Applicants should have senior hotel operating experience during renovation or comparable disruption. They must explain a case where protecting the guest experience required a difficult commercial decision. Strong candidates can challenge optimistic schedules constructively and communicate the operating consequences clearly.
Build an honest operating picture
Review the proposed works sequence against guest journeys, access, noise, utilities and back-of-house activity. Identify dependencies that could make a seemingly isolated work package disruptive to the wider property. Examine the capacity of employees to operate temporary arrangements while maintaining ordinary service.
Assess existing bookings and future sales commitments against the realistic offer during each phase. Determine where communication must change and where accepting certain business would create an unreasonable expectation. Consider the consequences of partial closure, reduced amenities or altered arrival and dining arrangements.
Advice for a phased trading plan
Develop options for occupancy, service scope and commercial positioning through the works. Recommend decision gates tied to actual readiness rather than assumed completion dates. Identify contingency responses if a phase is delayed or an essential facility becomes unavailable.
The advisor should work with project and operating teams to ensure the commercial plan reflects technical realities. They will not direct contractors, approve works or certify safety. Management retains responsibility for guest commitments, staff deployment and live trading decisions, informed by the relevant specialists.
Updating the trading decision
Deliver a practical trading framework, communication principles and escalation triggers that managers can update as evidence changes. Success means the property makes promises it can keep and preserves trust through the transition. The advice should support a credible reopening or relaunch sequence, with sufficient operating readiness to prevent the renovated physical product from arriving before the service organisation can deliver the intended experience.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Switzerland. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
