The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will join the board and its audit and risk work with a focus on financial information, liquidity and operational dependencies in travel services. The role must connect transaction risk with the reporting and controls that allow directors to respond. It is intended for a finance leader who can ask precise questions without becoming absorbed in routine management activity.
What would cause the financial picture to become unreliable?
Review the completeness and timeliness of information about customer funds, supplier obligations and unresolved service claims. Examine reconciliations between booking, payment and finance systems. Where management relies on estimates, understand the evidence supporting them and how changes in assumptions reach the board.
Challenge resilience as well as reporting
Assess scenarios in which a supplier failure, payment interruption or sharp demand change affects both service delivery and cash. Require contingency options with realistic timing and responsible owners. A risk register is insufficient if the organisation has not considered what it can actually do when a dependency fails.
Work with the committee chair to prioritise assurance over material control areas. Review access to financial systems, payment approval and the management of exceptions. Repeated findings should lead to investigation of ownership and resources, not only a renewed promise of remediation.
Who is qualified
Candidates should bring substantial finance, audit or risk experience in travel, aviation, hospitality or a comparable service business. They need a strong grasp of financial reporting and the confidence to challenge incomplete evidence. Committee experience is valuable, but must be accompanied by a clear understanding of the boundary between director oversight and executive responsibility.
Contribution and conduct
The appointed person is a full board director, with committee participation defined in the governance arrangements. They will not operate financial controls, negotiate customer settlements or manage incidents. Success means better visibility of exposure, assurance directed at the important risks and board decisions based on a consistent account of financial capacity.
Candidates must disclose other appointments, advisory relationships and financial interests that could affect independent judgement. The board will expect the director to remain engaged with unresolved issues and to recognise when a matter warrants wider board attention rather than continued treatment as a technical committee detail.
