Non-Executive Director — Food Ingredient Quality and Commercial Risk

Agricultural commodities organisation in Switzerland
The problem this seat exists to solve
The board seeks a director able to connect the quality obligations of food ingredients with commercial decision-making. The seat concerns oversight of sourcing, product specifications, claims and the consequences of a failure to meet customer requirements. It requires an understanding that a profitable contract can carry disproportionate exposure if the controls supporting its product promises are weak.
Qualifications at the quality-commercial boundary
Candidates need senior experience in food ingredients, agricultural processing, product assurance or related commercial governance. They should be able to examine technical evidence and translate it into board-level choices. Familiarity with quality systems is necessary, but the role also demands judgement about contracting, supply continuity and the economics of prevention.
Supplier evidence and escalation
Challenge the framework for approving suppliers, new ingredients and material specification changes. Review whether management has adequate evidence to support claims about origin, composition and handling. Where assurance is provided by third parties, ask what their work actually covers, how exceptions are addressed and which responsibilities remain with the business.
Examine how quality concerns reach senior management and the board. The reporting should distinguish routine nonconformance from issues that may affect multiple lots, customers or markets. Review the readiness of traceability and incident arrangements, including the ability to identify affected stock and coordinate decisions with authorised specialists.
Incentives that affect acceptance decisions
Scrutinise the commercial incentives around supplier selection and acceptance of exceptions. A short-term saving should not obscure the cost of claims, disposal, replacement or damaged customer relationships. The director should support a culture in which concerns can be raised promptly while ensuring that response decisions remain evidence-based and proportionate.
Governance without product-release authority
This appointment is to the board, not to a technical sign-off or operational quality role. Executives and qualified specialists retain responsibility for product release and incident execution. The director contributes through collective decisions and agreed committee responsibilities. Expected value includes clearer oversight of material quality exposure, better-informed sourcing decisions and credible readiness for adverse events. Candidates must demonstrate independence from suppliers, laboratories or assurance providers whose services may be considered by the organisation.
