The problem this seat exists to solve
The board seeks a director who can assess competing claims for engineering investment in technical renewal and new product development. The remit is to improve strategic judgement where management must choose between visible near-term features and work that preserves future speed, reliability or security. Neither category should receive automatic priority without an explanation of value and consequence.
Balance renewal with the next product opportunity
Challenge how technical debt is described and quantified. Ask which limitations are actively constraining delivery, which create material operational exposure and which are primarily matters of engineering preference. Management should be able to identify the decision or capability that an investment will enable, and the likely cost of delaying it.
Qualifications for judging competing investment claims
Candidates should bring senior engineering leadership with experience allocating investment between maintenance, renewal and innovation. They need strong commercial communication and the ability to evaluate uncertainty without demanding false precision. Experience explaining a decision to stop or reduce a technical programme is valuable evidence of balanced judgement.
The board's investment choices
Review proposals for platform renewal, architecture change and experimentation alongside the product strategy. Require staged commitments where uncertainty is high and distinguish learning milestones from commercial outcomes. An experiment can be worthwhile without becoming a permanent programme, provided the decision it informs is clear.
Monitor whether approved renewal work delivers the expected improvement. Faster release, lower support burden or reduced dependency risk should be evidenced rather than assumed after a migration. The director should also challenge situations where every new initiative is delayed by a perpetual transformation whose scope continues to expand.
The appointment is a genuine board role, with any committee responsibilities agreed as part of the seat. The director will not act as chief architect or approve individual technical designs. Management retains execution accountability. The desired contribution is a better investment dialogue: clearer options, explicit consequences of deferral and a disciplined view of whether engineering expenditure is improving the organisation's ability to serve customers. Candidates must disclose vendor, advisory and investment interests that may affect the independence of their recommendations.
