The lead will take delivery responsibility for improving engineering configuration and service dependency information. The assignment addresses the practical need to know which components, versions and connections support a service, and how that knowledge remains accurate as change continues. It is not intended to create an exhaustive catalogue that becomes obsolete before it is used.

Technical information and its decision uses

Identify the information required for release, incident response, recovery and assurance decisions. Review existing repositories, deployment records and operational inventories for gaps and contradictions. Prioritise critical services and dependencies, making the confidence level of current information explicit rather than presenting an uncertain inventory as complete.

Lead reconciliation of the most important records and establish accountable ownership. Work with platform and delivery teams to capture information from reliable sources where practical. Where manual input remains necessary, define when it is required and how accuracy is checked.

Test the usefulness of the information through real scenarios, such as identifying affected services after a component issue or determining the implications of a planned change. Refine the model around those decisions. The lead should prevent the programme from expanding into data collection without a clear operational purpose.

Experience and the sustainable ownership requirement

Candidates need technical configuration, service management or engineering operations experience with direct improvement delivery. They should understand software and infrastructure dependencies and be able to work across teams that use different terminology and tools. Strong candidates can demonstrate how they made an inventory or configuration process remain useful after the initial clean-up.

The lead will own the agreed remediation backlog and coordination of information standards. Access to systems and changes to production remain subject to established authority. The engagement should leave a trusted core of configuration information, a sustainable update process and explicit ownership of remaining gaps. Handover must identify where confidence is limited and what decisions should not rely solely on the current data. Success is improved decision quality and response capability, not the largest possible count of recorded assets.
