Make the portfolio executable

The director will take executive responsibility for coordinating engineering delivery across a portfolio of products and programmes. The central problem is the interaction between priorities, shared specialists and dependencies: individual teams may appear well managed while the overall portfolio remains impossible to deliver. This role must turn strategic intent into a sequence that the organisation can execute.

Establish a complete view of active commitments and the capacity they consume. Identify work that is duplicated, waiting for decisions or dependent on scarce expertise. Agree a prioritisation method with executive sponsors that makes trade-offs explicit and provides a route to stop work when a more important commitment is accepted.

Operational decisions and rhythm

Lead portfolio planning, dependency resolution and escalation. Ensure teams receive decisions in time to act on them, and that changes in scope or timing are reflected across dependent work. Reporting should reveal confidence, risks and unresolved choices, rather than aggregate optimistic team-level status into a misleading overall picture.

Improve commitments before they enter the plan

Work with engineering and product leaders to improve the quality of commitments entering the portfolio. Initiatives need a defined outcome, accountable sponsor and credible route to acceptance. Where discovery is still required, treat it as a bounded stage with a decision at the end rather than pretending the full delivery plan is already known.

Delegation and a sustainable planning cycle

The role carries authority over the agreed portfolio process and escalation route, with resource and budget decisions exercised within delegated limits. Product strategy and material investment remain with designated executives. The engagement should leave a functioning planning cycle, visible dependency ownership and a permanent team capable of maintaining discipline. Handover must include outstanding decisions, capacity constraints and a clear account of which commitments remain at risk despite the improvements made.
