The problem this seat exists to solve
This executive assignment establishes effective management control in an operating business whose growth requires clearer delegation. The general manager will translate broad leadership intent into decisions that managers can make, information they can trust and controls that protect the enterprise without centralising every routine choice.
A leadership system beyond individual intervention
Review how consequential decisions actually move through the organisation. Trace customer exceptions, purchases, recruitment and operating adjustments. Identify where managers lack the authority or information needed to act and where informal approvals expose the business to inconsistent commitments.
Delegation must be demonstrated in ordinary decisions
Define decision boundaries with the executive sponsor and implement them through budgets, approval routes and management routines. Test the proposed arrangements using real cases, including urgent exceptions. A delegation is incomplete if the named owner must still seek informal permission to use it.
Establish a concise management review connecting sales, delivery, cash and people. Require evidence that allows managers to act before a problem reaches crisis. Remove duplicated reporting that consumes attention without supporting a decision, while retaining controls necessary to detect error or unauthorised commitments.
The general manager will lead implementation and develop the capability of the management team. Reserved ownership decisions and specialist professional responsibilities remain with the appropriate authorities. The assignment must clarify those boundaries rather than silently expanding the interim executive's mandate.
Before handover, test whether managers can resolve ordinary decisions consistently and escalate exceptional matters with a useful recommendation. Ensure that reporting ownership and review routines survive changes in personnel.
Success means fewer avoidable approval loops, clearer accountability and earlier detection of material problems. The permanent leadership team should understand how to amend authorities as the business changes. The deliverable is a functioning management system embedded in operating behaviour, supported by documentation rather than defined by it.
Management-building experience required
Applicants should have led a business unit or enterprise through a stage requiring stronger management systems. Demonstrate how you developed managers, introduced useful controls and reduced dependence on a central leader without losing oversight.
The role requires financial fluency and practical understanding of commercial and operating work. Explain an instance when a control was technically sound but unsuitable for the way the business operated, and how you redesigned it. Candidates should also show willingness to address capability gaps rather than treating every failure as a defect in the process.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Nigeria usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in Nigeria
- A non-resident director attending board meetings travels on a business visa. Executive and resident roles require expatriate quota approval and a CERPAC.
