The problem this seat exists to solve
Lead an operating business during a transition in its permanent executive leadership. The interim mandate is to maintain decision quality, commercial focus and organisational confidence while preparing an orderly transfer of responsibility. It requires enough intervention to address material problems without allowing temporary leadership to become an excuse for avoidable strategic drift.
Establish the continuity priorities
Identify decisions that cannot wait, commitments at risk and relationships that depend excessively on one individual. Review the leadership team's authority and ensure that customers, suppliers and employees know who can make consequential decisions during the transition.
Distinguish matters requiring immediate executive action from choices that should be prepared for the incoming leader. Where delay would destroy value or create exposure, present a decision with its rationale and consequences. Where a choice can wait, preserve the evidence and alternatives rather than allowing uncertainty to stall preparatory work.
What experience should demonstrate
Applicants should have led a profit-and-loss business and managed executive succession, temporary leadership or a comparable period of organisational uncertainty. Demonstrate an ability to establish credibility quickly without depending on extensive restructuring to signal control.
Candidates should explain how they balanced continuity with necessary change, including a decision they deliberately left for a successor. Strong financial and operating judgement, clear communication and disciplined delegation are required. The role is unsuitable for an executive who treats an interim appointment primarily as a vehicle for imposing a preferred organisation model.
Manage performance and prepare the transfer together
Own the business result within the agreed interim mandate. Maintain a focused review of cash, customers, delivery and leadership capacity. Address material capability or conduct issues through the proper process rather than deferring every difficult matter to the permanent appointment.
Prepare a handover that explains the business through decisions, assumptions and obligations. Include unresolved issues, the reliability of available information and the relationships requiring early attention. Work with the appointing authority on an appropriate transition between executives, while respecting the confidentiality of the selection process.
Success means the incoming leader receives a controlled business, a candid account of its position and a management team able to continue operating. The interim managing director should leave neither a hidden backlog of deferred problems nor a set of unnecessary commitments that restrict the successor's legitimate choices.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Nigeria usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in Nigeria
- A non-resident director attending board meetings travels on a business visa. Executive and resident roles require expatriate quota approval and a CERPAC.
