Interim Managing Director — Multi-Unit Business Recovery

The problem this seat exists to solve

This appointment requires an executive who has held responsibility for several operating units and can distinguish a local problem from a weakness in the overall business model. Candidates should show how they have improved performance without treating every unit as an identical case. Evidence of difficult resource choices, management changes and sustained follow-through is essential.

Experience leading through uneven performance

The interim managing director will lead a recovery programme across units with different customer mixes, cost structures and operating constraints. The work begins with a comparable view of performance, but decisions must reflect the economics and practical role of each unit.

Establish what each unit contributes

Reconcile revenue, margin, cash, service quality and central support consumption. Identify units that appear profitable because costs are borne elsewhere, as well as strategically useful activities whose contribution is obscured by allocation methods. Examine management capability and local market conditions before concluding that a unit's result reflects execution alone.

Use this analysis to distinguish businesses requiring operational repair, commercial repositioning, investment or a change in scope. Present proposed closures or major commitments through the appropriate approval process, including the consequences for customers, employees and shared infrastructure.

Execute differentiated recovery choices

Set a small number of priorities for each unit, with named owners and resources. Direct operating leaders through implementation and resolve conflicts that arise when one unit's improvement transfers cost or risk to another. Ensure central functions provide the support necessary to deliver the agreed changes.

Review progress through operating evidence rather than uniform improvement percentages. A unit should not be declared recovered because expenditure has been delayed or service obligations have accumulated outside the reporting period. Track whether underlying customer economics and management routines have changed.

The executive decision discipline

The managing director controls operating execution within the delegated mandate and remains accountable for the combined business result. Reserved ownership and board decisions must be escalated with alternatives and consequences. Local managers should retain meaningful authority over the choices for which they are assessed.

Handover requires a clear portfolio of unit-level plans, a dependable performance review and management capable of continuing the work. Applicants should discuss an intervention where different parts of a business needed different answers, including how they maintained coherence while avoiding a uniform restructuring prescription.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Nigeria usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Nigeria
A non-resident director attending board meetings travels on a business visa. Executive and resident roles require expatriate quota approval and a CERPAC.
