Private-equity-backed banking and financial services organisation

The problem this seat exists to solve

The country business of a private-equity-backed banking and financial services organisation needs an Interim Country Managing Director to balance near-term cash with strategic capacity for 24 months, with the Group Chief Executive Officer as the reporting line.

Running a country bank for this year and for the next three

A country managing director in a private-equity-backed banking group answers two questions at once: what the business returns this year, and what it will be capable of in three. The Interim Country Managing Director will carry both for 24 months, with executive authority and a reporting line to the Group Chief Executive Officer.

The authority is wide. You will set the country's decision framework, including what local leaders may approve on their own, and choose the measures by which investment, capacity and controls are judged. Inherited commitments go on, pause or end on your say; stop any proposal moving cost or risk with no accountable executive behind it; and turn down investment that ignores take-up, operating dependencies or downside. You approve how the country's leaders are organised and how issues escalate, and you resolve disagreements between the Group Chief Executive Officer and the operators before money is committed.

The judgement at the core is the trade-off between near-term cash and longer-term capacity. In banking the two often collide in the same budget line: a technology programme, a change in distribution, a risk capability that pays back slowly. Good country leaders resist treating that as a single annual cut. They separate the commitments that protect the franchise from those that merely defend last year's plan, and they make the distinction explicit to the owners so that it is debated rather than assumed. Under sponsor ownership that clarity is usually welcomed, provided the numbers behind each choice are honest.

Cash now, capacity later, both on record

When the first ninety days end, the country decision framework should be agreed, with a clear line between near-term cash priorities and capacity-building commitments. Around month nine country commitments should have been sorted into those kept, held and ended, and investment lacking take-up or downside cases should have been declined. By month 24 the country leadership structure and escalation route should be settled, with the value agenda running through a regular board rhythm.

A country leader with restructuring behind them

You have been a general manager in banking and financial services, in a business with no less than $360 million in revenue and 700 people, across two countries. The Group Chief Executive will look for a cost transformation felt as much on the front line as in the boardroom, a joint venture, and a restructuring. Strategy formation is needed at level 4; risk judgement, a firm operating cadence and ownership of a P&L are needed at level 3. Expect to discuss baselines you set that held up under challenge from senior leadership and from the people closest to customers and controls, and funding you refused when take-up and downside were unnamed, along with the capacity you rebuilt afterwards.

Getting to the board

Selection opens in week one with a first conversation, in confidence and by video, with the Group Chief Executive Officer. The Board Chair works through the third week's session with you, and the fifth week assembles executive leaders from each function as an in-person panel. The full board decides in a seventh-week discussion. Two working days after each stage, you hear in writing how it went.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Japan usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Japan
A non-resident outside director attending board meetings does not require a status of residence. An executive or representative-director role does, typically under the Business Manager status.
