The problem this seat exists to solve
The board seeks a director to challenge portfolio performance and capital allocation across hospitality activities. The remit requires a consistent financial view while recognising that locations may have different customer mixes, asset conditions and operating models. Comparability should improve decisions, not create pressure to force every business into the same short-term target.
What management must explain
Review the drivers of revenue, operating contribution, cash and capital consumption. Ask whether changes in performance reflect market conditions, commercial choices or operating execution. Examine how central costs and shared services are allocated, and whether the method distorts decisions about property performance.
Challenge plans for underperforming activities. Management should identify the cause, proposed response, resources required and evidence that would support further commitment. A repeated request for more time is insufficient without a clear account of what has changed and why the next plan is more credible.
Capital and management attention
Assess competing proposals across the portfolio, including maintenance, repositioning and expansion. Consider the capacity of management to deliver them simultaneously. The director should help the board recognise when a programme of individually attractive projects becomes unrealistic in aggregate.
Review outcomes against the original decision logic and support a disciplined approach to lessons. The objective is not to punish every forecast error but to improve the quality of future choices and respond promptly when a course no longer makes sense.
Who can add value
Candidates require senior hospitality finance, portfolio or board experience with responsibility for multiple operating units. They need analytical depth and the ability to discuss service and asset realities with executives. Experience across African markets is useful, while appropriate local advice remains necessary for market-specific questions.
This is a director appointment, not a regional operations role. Executives retain line-management and investment-delivery responsibility. Any committee remit will be agreed as part of the seat.
Expected contribution includes clearer performance narratives, better capital prioritisation and a board that distinguishes temporary volatility from a deteriorating business model. Candidates must show independent judgement and disclose ownership, operator, supplier or advisory interests that could influence their assessment of portfolio choices.
