The problem this seat exists to solve
The adviser will help leaders understand the relationship between engineering expenditure, delivery capacity and business outcomes. The assignment is not a headcount-reduction exercise by default. It should reveal how effort is divided among product development, reliability, support, technical renewal and avoidable rework, so that investment choices can be made on a credible basis.
The cost and capacity evidence leadership needs
Review existing cost allocation, planning data and delivery measures. Identify where categories are inconsistent or where teams spend significant time on work absent from the official roadmap. Examine contractor use, shared services and external technology costs alongside internal capacity. The aim is to create an honest view without imposing burdensome time recording that consumes more value than it produces.
Experience bridging engineering and finance
Candidates should combine engineering leadership knowledge with strong analytical and commercial skills. They need experience explaining technology investment to finance and executive audiences without relying on simplistic output metrics. Evidence of improving capacity decisions through transparent data is particularly relevant.
Recognise non-interchangeable capacity
Develop a practical capacity model that recognises uncertainty and non-interchangeable skills. Show how changes in priorities affect delivery rather than assuming every engineer can move instantly between products. Analyse recurring interruptions and support demand to identify opportunities that could release capacity through better product or operational decisions.
Put cost choices beside delivery consequences
Work with finance and engineering leaders to connect expenditure discussions to outcomes. A lower cost base can be accompanied by greater service risk or slower product response; a higher cost base needs a clear explanation of the capability or growth it supports. Recommendations should make these trade-offs explicit.
Transfer a maintainable method
Deliver an agreed set of definitions, a capacity and cost view, and recommendations for the planning cycle. Include the limitations of the data and the decisions it can reasonably support. This advisory role has no authority to change staffing, supplier contracts or budgets. Management retains those decisions. The adviser should leave a process that teams can maintain and trust, with sufficient detail to support prioritisation but without turning engineering work into an artificial accounting exercise detached from actual delivery.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in the United Kingdom. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.

United Kingdom·Agribusiness & Food
Cooperative or mutual agribusiness and food systems organisation
At the front line of a member-owned agribusiness and food organisation, quality, capacity and cost decisions should be made together; an interim chief of supply chain and operations, reporting to the Board Operations Committee, has 12 months to make that the norm.
Interim Governance Director — Controls
United Kingdom·Agribusiness & Food
Cooperative or mutual agribusiness and food systems organisation
Aligning board succession with the work its portfolio requires is a 12-month task this member-owned agribusiness and food organisation is giving to an Interim Governance Director, reporting to the Board Chair.
Interim Commodity Operations Control Lead
United Kingdom·Agribusiness & Food

Leave a controlled transaction process, documented reconciliations and a realistic backlog for remaining systems improvements. The permanent team should understand which exceptions require immediate action and which can follow a routine timetable. Management reporting must show unresolved exposure honestly rather than relying on the disappearance of old items from a spreadsheet.
