The problem this seat exists to solve
The adviser will evaluate routes to commercial value for cybersecurity-related intellectual property and technical capability. The assignment connects customer need, productisation, licensing and delivery obligations. It requires commercial and technical judgement, while formal legal opinions on ownership, protection and contract terms remain with qualified advisers.
Compare the available routes
Assess whether the capability is best developed into a standalone product, embedded in another offering, licensed or advanced through a partnership. Each option should explain the required investment, retained responsibilities and route to customer adoption. Avoid treating licensing as a low-effort alternative if integration support and ongoing maintenance remain substantial.
Review the evidence supporting differentiation and identify gaps that could affect a customer's willingness to rely on the technology. Examine the relationship between published claims, demonstrable capability and the operating conditions in which results have been obtained. The adviser should make limitations explicit rather than attempt to resolve uncertainty through stronger positioning language.
Candidates and working method
Candidates need substantive experience commercialising cybersecurity or deep-technology assets. They should understand product development, technical partnerships and the practical economics of licensing. Experience working with intellectual-property specialists is valuable, but the role does not require or permit the adviser to substitute for their professional advice.
Work with leadership to test options against realistic customer and partner requirements. Identify which conversations or experiments would provide useful evidence before a major commitment. Recommendations must distinguish a plausible commercial route from one that has already been validated.
Deliverables and limits
Provide a commercialisation assessment, prioritised options and a staged evidence plan. Include likely capability gaps and the management responsibilities each route creates. The adviser has no authority to transfer rights, make exclusivity commitments or negotiate binding agreements without separate authorisation.
Success is a clearer decision about how to pursue value and what must be proved next. The engagement should leave management able to compare opportunities consistently without assuming that every technically interesting asset warrants full product investment. Candidates must disclose interests in potential partners, competing technologies and investment vehicles that could affect independent advice.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in the United Kingdom. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.

Management reporting must show unresolved exposure honestly rather than relying on the disappearance of old items from a spreadsheet.
