The problem this seat exists to solve

This CFO mandate focuses on a debt maturity that requires early, credible preparation. The appointee must establish what financing the industrial business can support and when each available route ceases to be practical.

What a decision-ready financing case contains

Build a reconciled forecast of operating cash, maintenance investment, seasonal working capital and debt service. Distinguish cash in the group from cash available to the borrowing entity. Identify fees, repayments and reserves that affect the funds available after a transaction.

Challenge forecast improvements against operating evidence. Order intake is not a collection forecast, and a margin target is not an executed commercial action. The CFO must secure accountable assumptions from the managers whose decisions determine cash generation.

Candidate qualifications

Candidates should have held senior finance responsibility through a significant industrial refinancing. They need treasury, reporting and lender-diligence experience, together with the ability to challenge operating plans. A record limited to advising on transactions will not cover the executive ownership required.

Negotiation and implementation responsibility

Compare proposals on operating flexibility, security, covenant design and execution certainty as well as financing cost. Present the board with a timetable that preserves alternatives. Coordinate diligence and ensure that changed assumptions are reflected consistently in written material, models and management explanations.

Before accepting a facility

Test the effect of a delayed customer receipt, weaker utilisation and a necessary maintenance intervention. Ask whether the structure remains usable when those events occur together. Where interpretation of a financing term is material, obtain specialist advice and document the operational consequence.

A finance function ready for the new obligations

The engagement should leave calculation ownership, a reporting calendar and an escalation process for emerging pressure. Require the permanent team to reproduce the financing measures and understand their source data. Completion means the business can operate the agreed facilities reliably, rather than remaining dependent on the individual who negotiated them.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in the United Kingdom usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in the United Kingdom
A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a work visa; permitted business activities cover it. An executive or interim operating role requires a Skilled Worker visa or equivalent.

Leave a controlled transaction process, documented reconciliations and a realistic backlog for remaining systems improvements. The permanent team should understand which exceptions require immediate action and which can follow a routine timetable. Management reporting must show unresolved exposure honestly rather than relying on the disappearance of old items from a spreadsheet.
