The problem this seat exists to solve

A software business is increasing product demand faster than its engineering organisation can reliably deliver. The VP will improve leadership structure, prioritisation and service reliability while preserving the speed needed to compete.

Diagnose the constraints

You will assess architecture, team responsibilities and the main constraints on product delivery. First month: establish a delivery and reliability baseline and agree the most important constraints to address.

What you will own

1. Align engineering capacity with product priorities and establish a transparent approach to trade-offs.

2. Improve incident learning, release practices and ownership of reliability and technical debt.

3. Develop engineering managers, clarify career expectations and address critical hiring or succession gaps.

4. Give executives a concise view of delivery predictability, service quality and engineering investment needs.

Evidence by ninety days and six months

By day 90: implement team ownership and delivery routines and complete priority reliability improvements. By month six: demonstrate better performance against agreed delivery and reliability measures with an effective engineering leadership handover.

Experience suited to this stage

The role requires VP or senior engineering leadership with responsibility for managers and live products; evidence of organisational change, software delivery and reliability improvement.

Additional useful experience includes experience scaling distributed teams and operating a significant engineering site in a multinational organisation.

Reporting relationship and duration

The role carries executive delivery responsibility within an agreed budget and delegation. It reports to the CEO, or to the board where the appointment is for CEO. Major decisions follow the organisation’s reserved matters.

An initial six to nine months is envisaged, normally four to five days a week, including diagnosis and an orderly handover. Start date, remuneration, travel and on-site attendance will be agreed for the appointment.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim mandate needs work authorisation. A board seat in the United Kingdom usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in the United Kingdom
A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a work visa; permitted business activities cover it. An executive or interim operating role requires a Skilled Worker visa or equivalent.

Independent Director for Resource Acquisitions and Capital Allocation

United Kingdom·Mining & Metals

Non-Executive Director — Refinancing Oversight

United Kingdom·Industrial Manufacturing

Manufacturing organisation in United Kingdom

The board needs scrutiny of refinancing readiness early enough to influence the outcome. This mandate concerns the quality of financing decisions, the credibility of management’s plan and the risk of allowing a maturity timetable to dictate strategy.
