The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will take responsibility for the engineering response to a pattern of significant service incidents or control failures. The assignment is to stabilise delivery and ensure remediation addresses underlying causes. It requires coordination across technical teams, service owners and risk specialists, with clear accountability for what is fixed and what remains exposed.
Incident-to-remediation leadership
Candidates should have senior engineering, reliability or technology operations experience, including leadership through serious incidents and subsequent remediation. They need technical credibility, disciplined investigation and the ability to keep teams focused under scrutiny. Experience must extend beyond incident coordination into completed corrective delivery.
Establish causes and prioritise corrective work
Review incident records, recurring symptoms and previous corrective actions. Establish which conclusions are supported by evidence and which remain hypotheses. Identify immediate protective measures separately from deeper remediation so that temporary containment is not mistaken for a permanent solution.
Prioritise engineering work according to service impact, recurrence potential and dependencies. Allocate owners and establish acceptance evidence for each corrective action. Where a fix changes architecture, access or operating procedures, ensure the consequences are examined before implementation. The director should challenge closure based only on a task being completed or a document being updated.
Communicate uncertainty and decisions
Coordinate communication with executives and service leaders through an accurate account of progress and residual uncertainty. Encourage candid reporting without removing accountability for decisions and execution. If an issue requires a change in investment, service commitment or risk acceptance, bring it to the authorised decision-maker with clear alternatives.
Verified improvement and retained risk authority
Within agreed authority, the director will own the remediation plan and engineering priorities assigned to it. Formal incident declarations, external communications and risk acceptance remain with designated owners. The engagement should leave verified improvements, a reduced recurrence risk and a permanent process for checking that corrective actions remain effective. Handover must include unresolved causes and temporary controls. The director must be willing to state when available evidence does not yet justify declaring an issue resolved.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in the United Kingdom usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in the United Kingdom
- A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a work visa; permitted business activities cover it. An executive or interim operating role requires a Skilled Worker visa or equivalent.

Leave a controlled transaction process, documented reconciliations and a realistic backlog for remaining systems improvements. The permanent team should understand which exceptions require immediate action and which can follow a routine timetable. Management reporting must show unresolved exposure honestly rather than relying on the disappearance of old items from a spreadsheet.
