The problem this seat exists to solve

Applicants should have led a lender-facing turnaround involving volatile consumer revenues and constrained liquidity. They must show how they maintained a common fact base when stakeholders preferred different outcomes. Experience with operational intervention, stakeholder negotiation and disciplined cash control is required; a background limited to transaction execution will not cover the remit.

Hold the recovery together

This role sits at the intersection of consumer trading performance, creditor confidence and management execution. The restructuring officer must create a shared account of what is recoverable and organise the work needed to make that recovery credible.

The leadership challenge

Consumer demand can move faster than a restructuring timetable. The appointee will therefore connect short-cycle trading indicators to cash decisions, inventory commitments and the evolving funding requirement. Build recovery scenarios that distinguish a trading rebound from actions management can control, and make the cost of delay visible to the board.

Responsibility during negotiation and implementation

Coordinate the operating recovery plan, lender reporting and management’s participation in restructuring discussions. Test whether store, channel, product or supplier changes create near-term cash demands before benefits arrive. Ensure commitments made in negotiations are reflected in operating plans and owned by the executives expected to deliver them. Escalate emerging distress issues for appropriate professional assessment.

Use short-cycle trading evidence to challenge the recovery plan: order conversion, returns, promotional dependence and cash margin can deteriorate before the formal reporting pack changes. Establish clear triggers for revisiting the plan and distinguish management actions from assumptions about market recovery. When seeking creditor support, show how the requested time or funding changes the outcome. The officer must be prepared to recommend an alternative route if the operating evidence no longer supports the original plan, rather than protecting a negotiation position at the expense of decision quality.

Evidence of success

Success includes dependable reporting, fewer surprises in cash requirements and demonstrable delivery of recovery actions. Candidates should be prepared to explain a situation where the original recovery thesis failed, how quickly they recognised it and how they preserved options while changing course.

Appointment
Interim executive

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim mandate needs work authorisation. A board seat in the United Kingdom usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in the United Kingdom
A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a work visa; permitted business activities cover it. An executive or interim operating role requires a Skilled Worker visa or equivalent.
