Software engineering organisation in Austria
The problem this seat exists to solve
Deliver a decision-rights map, agreed leadership interfaces and a practical implementation sequence. Include a review mechanism to test whether the agreements reduce delay and rework. Facilitate handover to an internal sponsor who can maintain the arrangements when the adviser leaves.
Integration experience and advisory limits
Candidates should have senior engineering leadership and experience integrating teams with different histories or operating methods. They need credibility with technical leaders and the ability to mediate without turning every disagreement into a compromise that nobody can execute. This role has no line-management authority and does not make individual appointment or employment decisions. Executives retain ownership of the final organisation and its consequences. The adviser must surface disagreements that require executive choice rather than disguising them as issues that another workshop will automatically resolve.
Resolve leadership ambiguity before it becomes delivery failure
The adviser will help engineering leaders establish effective working arrangements after an acquisition or organisational combination. The assignment focuses on decision rights, leadership interfaces and the handling of competing product commitments. It is intended for a situation where technically capable teams need a coherent way to work together, rather than another layer of reporting imposed above unresolved disagreements.
Interview relevant leaders and examine recent decisions that stalled, were reversed or produced conflicting instructions. Map authority over architecture, product priorities, staffing, release readiness and operational incidents. Identify where responsibilities overlap and where no leader has both the information and remit needed to resolve an issue.
Facilitate concrete agreements
Develop options for leadership responsibilities and escalation routes. Test them against realistic decisions, including a shared-platform change, a customer-critical defect and a request that draws scarce expertise away from another team. The result should explain who decides, who contributes and how disagreement is handled without requiring every issue to reach the top executive.
Preserve knowledge while agreeing common standards
Address the relationship between inherited working practices and the intended organisation. Preserve useful local knowledge while clarifying which standards must be common. The adviser should make cultural tensions discussable through their effect on work, avoiding unsupported assumptions about why one team behaves differently from another.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Austria. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
