The problem this seat exists to solve
The engagement asks for an independent assessment of how a manufacturing operation should change to become economically sustainable. It requires practical understanding of production systems and the discipline to connect recommendations to cash, customer service and implementation capacity.
Areas for investigation
Examine production flow, capacity utilisation, product complexity, maintenance, scrap and scheduling. Identify whether poor performance arises from demand, process capability, organisation or an unsuitable production footprint. Compare improvements within the existing configuration with more substantial changes, making transition costs and execution risks explicit.
The diagnostic should include the constraints that determine throughput, not only average efficiency by department. Examine whether local production targets encourage unnecessary work-in-progress, whether changeover patterns reflect commercial complexity and whether maintenance deferral is creating recurring failures. Recommendations should show the conditions under which benefits will emerge and identify the data needed to verify them. The adviser should distinguish measures that improve reported absorption from those that improve total cash contribution, especially where additional production would simply increase unsold inventory.
Advice the board can act on
Develop a sequenced restructuring roadmap with decision points and named management responsibilities. Show which actions are reversible, which require investment and which may create workforce or customer consequences needing specialist support. Recommend a benefits baseline that prevents savings being counted before costs have actually left the business.
Candidate background
Candidates should have delivered operational restructuring in industrial settings and be able to explain the results after implementation. Experience should include engaging plant leadership and translating detailed operating evidence into board-level choices. A purely financial or programme-reporting background is unlikely to provide sufficient depth.
Scope boundaries and acceptance
This is an advisory role: recommendations, challenge and implementation support are distinct from executive authority. The work is successful when management can execute a realistic plan and the board can judge its progress using a few meaningful measures. Candidates should demonstrate how they have identified a proposed efficiency programme that would have damaged reliability or increased total system cost.

- Advisory engagement
Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Austria. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
