Strategic Planning and Value-Driver Trees Director mandate in Seoul, South Korea

Confidential Strategic Planning and Value-Driver Trees Director in Seoul, South Korea, reporting to the Head of Corporate Strategy. Permanent FP&A appointment at Director level, an ongoing appointment; full time.

The mandate

The Director will connect strategic propositions to a small number of testable economic drivers and the operating actions that influence them. Current strategic analysis can produce attractive end states without consistently revealing the pathway, dependencies or earliest evidence of divergence. The role will make strategy financially falsifiable while respecting that not every strategic choice can be reduced to a single return measure.

Value-driver trees will serve as decision maps, not decorative diagrams. Each tree must show causal links, time lags, constraint points, financial statement effects and indicators capable of confirming or challenging the underlying thesis. Competing explanations should remain visible until evidence supports resolution.

The Director may set analytical standards, approve tree logic for formal decision use and require strategy papers to disclose missing links. Strategic choices remain with the designated executive forums; operating owners remain accountable for action. FP&A owns the integrity of the economic chain and its translation into planning.

Year one covers priority-tree construction, incorporation into the planning cycle, backtesting and establishment of a specialist capability. Success will be measured through earlier intervention when driver behavior changes, reduced reliance on unlinked top-down targets and documented decisions improved by the causal view.

What you will own

  • Select the limited set of strategic questions whose uncertainty and financial consequence justify full driver-tree treatment.
  • Build causal maps connecting actions, leading indicators, constraints, lagged outcomes and integrated financial effects.
  • Test link strength against observed history, comparable evidence and management judgement, labelling each source and confidence level.
  • Establish challenge sessions where alternative causal explanations are evaluated before a preferred narrative becomes embedded.
  • Translate approved trees into forecast drivers, trigger dashboards and accountable action plans without duplicating planning models.
  • Backtest key relationships quarterly and record whether a changed link reflects learning, structural movement or data weakness.
  • Approve the analytical readiness of driver trees used in strategy papers and return those lacking traceable economics.
  • Develop bilingual planning specialists able to maintain, challenge and explain the trees to executive audiences.

Candidate qualifications

  • At least 15 years in strategic FP&A, corporate planning or value-based management, including Director-level team leadership.
  • A personally led value-driver tree that changed a strategic choice, with evidence of the link, lag and financial consequence.
  • Technical depth in causal mapping, sensitivity, constraint analysis, time-lag modelling, integrated statements and indicator selection.
  • Examples of preserving competing hypotheses until sufficient evidence existed, rather than forcing consensus into the model.
  • Experience embedding driver trees into forecasts and management action without creating a parallel planning bureaucracy.
  • Professional fluency suitable for executive work in Korean and English and a record of bridging local and global decision norms.
  • Evidence of developing internal practitioners who could challenge and recalibrate causal logic independently.

Working terms and boundaries

  • This ongoing position carries first-year reviews after question selection, initial tree approval, planning integration and first backtest.
  • FP&A authority covers analytical standards and decision readiness; it does not include approval of strategy or operating interventions.
  • On-site presence is expected for causal-design workshops, executive challenges and quarterly relationship backtests.
  • A driver tree may express uncertainty and alternatives; it must never manufacture causality from correlation for presentation convenience.
  • Completion of the first-year arc requires adopted priority trees, traceable forecast links, recorded interventions and trained internal owners.
