A Seoul electronics board appoints a nine-month examiner to challenge human–robot task allocation, capability and workforce safeguards without holding executive, engineering, safety, employment or approval authority.

The mandate

Collaborative robots and vision systems are entering assembly, inspection and material-handling cells, but investment cases separate throughput from workforce transition. Operators inherit monitoring and exception work without redesigned roles, maintenance teams lack diagnostic depth, and temporary workers receive abbreviated preparation. The board wants evidence that human capability and safeguards evolve with automation rather than follow after deployment.

The adviser will challenge task decomposition, human and machine allocation, exception frequency, cognitive load, ergonomics, skill requirements, supervision, degraded-mode work, temporary-worker readiness and employee voice. Review will examine whether automation removes risk or merely redistributes it into rare interventions, surveillance, pace pressure and dependency on a few integrator-trained technicians.

The appointment runs for nine months with four cell-level work reviews, monthly evidence sessions and five board meetings. A human–robot consequence map will precede each discussion. Renewal is limited to one month if a material safety event or major automation redesign occurs during the original term and requires final board review.

The examiner has no line authority, executive responsibility, engineering authority, safety authority, employment authority, investment authority or approval authority. Engineers design systems; Operations runs plants; Safety approves controls; management makes employment and capital decisions. The adviser may challenge work assumptions and recommend pause but cannot configure robots, certify cells, select workers or negotiate workforce agreements.

Interests involving robotics vendors, integrators, equipment suppliers, safety assessors, unions, insurers and affected competitors must be disclosed. Referral or success economics tied to deployment are prohibited. The remit excludes engineering design, safety certification, capital approval, redundancy selection, individual assessment, collective bargaining, system testing and assurance.

Automation proposals quantify machine performance precisely while treating human exception work, learning and adaptation as generic change management. Directors need a challenger who can make those dependencies and redistributed risks visible without becoming integrator, safety assessor, operations leader or employment decision maker.

What you will own

  • Challenge task decomposition across normal production, setup, changeover, fault, quality escape and degraded operation.
  • Examine human and machine allocation for pace, cognition, ergonomics, supervision, authority and error recovery.
  • Test skill and practice requirements for operators, technicians, supervisors and temporary workers by cell state.
  • Compare promised risk removal with new intervention, monitoring, dependency and rare-event exposure.
  • Scrutinise worker consultation, feedback, accommodation and escalation before and after cell deployment.
  • Maintain a board ledger of unsupported workforce assumptions, integrator dependencies, worker evidence gaps and residual human-system risk.
  • Stress-test the design with sensor failure, integrator withdrawal, quality escape and novice intervention.

  • Advised boards on human–automation work design in electronics, automotive or advanced manufacturing.
  • Decomposed normal, exception and degraded work across operators, robots, technicians and supervisors.
  • Evaluated cognitive, ergonomic, safety and skill consequences beyond automation business-case headcount.
  • Challenged vendor dependency and rare intervention readiness using real cell-level work evidence.
  • Preserved boundaries among board oversight, engineering, Safety, operations, employment and worker representation.
  • Produced detailed human-system challenge records that remained decision-useful through complex commissioning, degraded operation, unexpected integrator withdrawal and significant workforce change worldwide.

Non-negotiables

  • Available for Seoul board sessions and four controlled electronics-cell work reviews.
  • Direct human–automation work design experience is required; generic change management is insufficient.
  • Will disclose robotics, integrator, equipment, safety, union, insurer and competitor relationships.
  • Will not design or certify cells, approve investment, select workers or negotiate workforce consequences.
