Confidential mandate
Board Operations Adviser — Semiconductor Packaging and Test
Planned Hiring / New
A semiconductor packaging enterprise wants an experienced operations adviser to test technology mix, yield governance and customer qualification before expanding advanced-packaging capacity for global customers.
The mandate
Directors must choose which advanced packaging capabilities justify scarce capital before customer qualification is complete. Current cases blend strategic optionality with loaded utilisation and yield assumptions that have not been independently challenged.
Three monthly days cover a line review, customer-qualification challenge and committee attendance. A capital or process-release pack receives acknowledgement within one day and comments within four working days.
The ten-month term ends at equipment award and qualification-plan approval. A two-month continuation is available by committee decision; the adviser has no line authority, process-release signature, customer commitment or executive accountability.
No more than two other material assignments may run. Relationships with competing OSATs, equipment manufacturers, material suppliers, customers or funding bodies require disclosure and may constrain document access.
Why the board wants this voice
The operating team has strong legacy packaging experience, while the expansion introduces unfamiliar process interactions and customer expectations. The committee needs pattern recognition from multiple ramps. Its purpose is sharper governance, not a shadow plant manager.
What you will own
- Test the proposed technology mix against committed customer roadmaps and qualification lead times.
- Challenge yield curves for process maturity, incoming material and equipment-learning assumptions.
- Press leaders on metrology, failure analysis and engineering-lot capacity before volume allocation.
- Shape gates for equipment acceptance, process release and customer qualification.
- Examine single-source exposure across substrates, chemicals, spares and technical support.
- Guide discussion of cleanroom, utility and talent bottlenecks that headline equipment plans omit.
- Advise the committee whether each capacity module should proceed, phase or wait.
Candidate qualifications
- 28+ years in semiconductor assembly, packaging, test or high-precision manufacturing.
- Direct leadership of an advanced-packaging or OSAT capacity ramp through customer qualification.
- Evidence of governing yield learning and capital release across multiple process technologies.
- Knowledge of substrate, material, equipment, metrology and reliability dependencies.
- Experience briefing boards on utilisation, customer concentration and qualification risk.
- Independence from equipment and material suppliers under consideration.
Non-negotiables
- Three onsite Chennai days each month through equipment award.
- Disclosure of OSAT, customer, equipment and material-supplier interests.
- No supplier representation, sourcing commission or operational sign-off.
- Four-working-day review of complete capital and qualification packs.
- 49 words maximum. Which advanced-packaging ramp did you govern, and what yield or qualification evidence changed capital release?
- 49 words maximum. Which OSAT, equipment, material or customer relationships should this board evaluate as conflicts?
- 49 words maximum. Can you commit three onsite days monthly through equipment award and qualification planning?
