The problem this seat exists to solve

The director will lead a time-bound cyber-recovery and resilience programme, coordinating technical restoration with business priorities. The remit is to establish a controlled route back to dependable operations and then reduce the conditions that could reproduce the disruption. It requires executive delivery accountability, including decisions on sequencing, resources and readiness within the authorised mandate.

Restore the right services first

Agree business-service priorities with accountable leaders and establish the evidence required before systems return to use. Understand dependencies among identity, data, infrastructure and external providers. Prevent parallel restoration efforts from creating inconsistent environments or bypassing essential checks under pressure.

Work with security, legal, communications and relevant specialist teams so that technical actions support the wider response. The director will not make unsupported statements about cause, impact or notification obligations. Those matters require verified evidence and the appropriate authority.

Stabilise the operating conditions

Introduce a clear decision cadence, issue ownership and a reliable view of restored capability. Manage the approved recovery team and supplier coordination. Assess temporary workarounds for data integrity, access and service risk, and ensure they have owners and retirement plans. A workaround that supports essential operations should not silently become the permanent design.

The transition out of exceptional management

Define criteria for moving services from recovery control to ordinary operations. Confirm support capacity, monitoring and tested recovery arrangements. Convert lessons into a prioritised investment and improvement plan, with realistic resources and governance rather than an uncosted catalogue of recommendations.

Qualifications tested through experience

Applicants should have led significant technology recovery or cyber-response operations with direct business accountability. They must explain how they handled incomplete information, conflicting restoration priorities and pressure to declare completion. Experience working with specialist investigators and external service providers is important, alongside calm and precise communication.

Completion evidence

Reserved risk acceptance, material expenditure and external statements remain with authorised owners. The director's success will be judged through dependable restored services, controlled residual exposure and a permanent team able to maintain the improvements. The final handover must explain what is known, what remains uncertain and what further evidence or investment is required, without confusing operational recovery with proof that every underlying weakness has been eliminated.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in South Africa usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in South Africa
A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a work visa. Executive and interim operating roles require a general work visa or a critical-skills visa.

South Africa·Telecommunications & Technology
