The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will lead the operating support provided to healthcare locations serving dispersed or resource-constrained communities. The appointment is based in a major service centre, with travel and field engagement determined by the mandate. Its focus is the reliability of the practical systems that allow local teams to provide care: staffing support, supplies, maintenance, information and escalation.
Start with failure points reported by the sites
Build a current picture of interruptions and their causes. Distinguish a persistent structural gap from a problem that can be resolved through clearer scheduling or ownership. Validate central reports with local teams, who may be compensating for weaknesses through effort that is invisible in the official operating model.
Prioritise support according to patient-service consequence and the ability to intervene. Establish a route for urgent operational needs that does not depend on personal relationships with head-office staff. Agree service expectations that central teams can meet and explain what sites should do when those expectations are not met.
Lead a practical support system
Coordinate supply, facilities, workforce and information functions within the agreed remit. Examine whether proposed technology improves field work under actual connectivity and power conditions. Create realistic contingencies for critical support failures and ensure local managers know their authority and limits.
Experience and clinical boundary
Candidates should have led healthcare operations across dispersed locations or similarly demanding settings. They need evidence of working respectfully with local teams and making resource decisions under constraint. Clinical experience may help, but this is an operational appointment. Any clinical practice requires appropriate local authorisation and a separately agreed scope; authorised clinical leaders retain decisions about treatment and standards of care.
The engagement should leave a support model that local sites can understand and use, with named owners and clear escalation. Track recurring interruptions and the time needed to restore essential service, alongside staff and patient feedback. Handover must identify risks that require investment or a change in service scope, rather than suggesting that every gap can be overcome through better coordination alone.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in South Africa usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in South Africa
- A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a work visa. Executive and interim operating roles require a general work visa or a critical-skills visa.
