The problem this seat exists to solve
Candidates should have held chief executive, managing director or substantial operating leadership responsibility through an acquisition or comparable ownership transition. Demonstrate how you protected commercial performance while introducing necessary controls and governance.
Integration leadership evidence
Applicants must be able to separate integration work from ordinary business improvement and from issues discovered after the transaction. Explain a case where you deferred a planned integration step because the receiving organisation was not ready, and the evidence that subsequently supported proceeding.
Choose what must become common and what can wait
Take executive responsibility for the operating integration of an acquired business. The assignment focuses on customers, people, management information and decision authority during the transition. Transaction completion creates a new ownership position; it does not establish how the combined operating responsibilities will work.
Identify which activities must change promptly and which can remain separate while their economics and dependencies are understood. Establish authority for pricing, hiring, expenditure and customer commitments. Prevent uncertainty about the future model from suspending routine decisions or driving staff to seek informal approval from several leaders.
Review integration proposals for their effect on service continuity and key capabilities. Shared functions may improve control but can also remove local knowledge or slow essential responses. Make those trade-offs explicit before changing reporting lines or systems.
Deliver the integration through the business result
Own the integration plan alongside operating performance. Assign benefits to accountable managers and reconcile savings claims with transition costs, service effects and the resources released. Address leadership overlaps directly and use appropriate people processes for employment decisions.
Maintain a clear route for issues that require ownership or board approval. The interim CEO should not allow integration workstreams to make commercial or organisational decisions beyond their delegated scope. Ensure that customers and employees receive consistent explanations of changes affecting them.
Leave an agreed operating model, a functioning leadership team and a record of unresolved integration choices. Distinguish completed work from benefits still dependent on future action. The permanent executive should inherit control of the business rather than a collection of project reports.
Success is measured through retained operating capability, coherent decisions and integration benefits supported by evidence. A rapid consolidation is not automatically a successful one if it weakens the capabilities that justified the acquisition.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in South Africa usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in South Africa
- A non-resident non-executive director attending board meetings does not require a work visa. Executive and interim operating roles require a general work visa or a critical-skills visa.
