Deep technology and semiconductors organisation in United States
The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will strengthen oversight of technology licensing and strategic partnerships. The board needs to understand not only the commercial opportunity but also the obligations, dependencies and limits on future choice that an arrangement creates. This seat calls for a leader who has seen partnerships operate beyond negotiation and can challenge whether the organisation is equipped to fulfil its part.
Review the economics and control
Examine proposed arrangements for revenue logic, support costs, exclusivity, development commitments and information rights. Specialist legal advice should address formal interpretation, while management explains the practical operating consequences. The director should ask how the arrangement behaves if adoption is slower, priorities change or the partner's capability proves weaker than expected.
Review how responsibility is allocated for product changes, technical assurance and customer support. Ambiguity at these interfaces can create both commercial disappointment and unmanaged risk. Require a clear escalation route for disagreements and a realistic account of the cost of exit or transition.
Candidate qualifications
Candidates should have senior executive or board experience with deep-technology licensing, ecosystem partnerships or product commercialisation. They need technical understanding and commercial judgement, including the ability to assess incentives. Experience managing an underperforming partnership is valuable when it demonstrates constructive choices and attention to the organisation's obligations.
Monitor the arrangement as a business decision
After approval, scrutinise performance against the original rationale and any conditions attached to the board's decision. A headline agreement is not evidence of realised value. Management should report adoption, economics, delivery commitments and emerging constraints in a form that supports action.
This is a director appointment with collective board responsibility. The director will not act as a deal intermediary or negotiate on behalf of a particular partner. Executives and appointed advisers retain those roles.
Effective contribution means better-defined agreements, clearer monitoring and timely decisions when the partnership no longer supports the intended strategy. Candidates must disclose interests in relevant technologies, counterparties and investors, and demonstrate independence when a commercially attractive relationship is connected to their own professional network.
