The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will help the board evaluate international growth plans through the lens of engineering capability and product support. Expansion can introduce new integration requirements, service expectations and coordination demands even where the core product appears unchanged. The seat requires independent judgement about whether management has recognised those demands and provided a proportionate response.
Assess the operating implications of expansion
Local adaptation is an investment choice
Challenge assumptions about how quickly engineering can support new markets, customer segments or delivery locations. Examine the balance between local adaptation and a coherent product base. Require management to explain which differences are essential, which are commercial preferences and which could create a long-term maintenance burden disproportionate to expected returns.
Distributed engineering and common capability
Review the organisation of distributed engineering teams, including ownership across locations, management capacity and access to critical expertise. Ask how incident response and product decisions work across working hours and languages. The board should understand where geographic diversification improves resilience and where it simply adds handoffs.
Scrutinise investment in common tooling, documentation and technical leadership as part of the growth case. These activities are not automatically overhead to minimise; they may be prerequisites for scaling reliably. Equally, challenge central programmes whose complexity exceeds the needs of the business and slows local delivery without a clear benefit.
Experience and independent board contribution
Candidates should have led engineering or technology operations across multiple European markets and contributed to commercial expansion decisions. They need to communicate the trade-offs of product adaptation, distributed delivery and shared platforms to nontechnical directors. A record of building durable operating practices is more relevant than experience opening offices without subsequent accountability for performance.
This is a director appointment with collective governance responsibility. The individual will not manage overseas engineering teams or negotiate technical commitments with customers. Their contribution should improve the realism of expansion plans, the clarity of technical investment requests and the board's understanding of service obligations created by growth. Candidates must demonstrate independence, sound judgement under uncertainty and sufficient availability to engage with material decisions beyond scheduled meetings when the board requires it.

- Appointment
- Board appointment
- Compensation
- EUR 35,000–65,000 per year (indicative annual board fee)

- A regular board cycle through the year plus committee or supervisory-board work; supervisory seats under the classic model carry a heavier audit workload than a board seat.
Before you apply — Portugal
No nationality or residency test applies to a director of a Portuguese company. What shapes a seat is the governance model the company has chosen and the 33.3% requirement on each body.
- Residency test
- None.
- Nationality test
- None.
- Work authorisation
- A non-executive director attending board meetings does not need Portuguese work authorisation. Executive roles for non-EU nationals require a residence permit.
- Tenure limit once appointed
- Twelve years under the IPCG Code — service in any corporate body of the company, continuous or intermittent, counts towards it. The statutory test for supervisory-body members is stricter: re-election for more than two terms defeats independence.
