The problem this seat exists to solve
The director will help the board assess how environmental transition and physical disruption may affect borrowers, collateral and portfolio strategy. The role requires disciplined banking analysis, avoiding both unsupported precision and broad commitments that are disconnected from underwriting and risk management.
Credit expertise for a changing risk horizon
Candidates need substantial banking credit, risk, strategy or finance experience, with credible exposure to environmental risk assessment in financial decisions. They should be comfortable challenging scenario models and explaining uncertainty to a board. Experience translating broad risk concerns into practical portfolio actions is particularly relevant.
Applicants must demonstrate balanced judgement and an ability to distinguish evidence from assertion. A specialist perspective is valuable only if it can be integrated with the bank's wider responsibilities and financial resilience.
Work from evidence and its limitations
Examine how management identifies exposures that may be affected by changing costs, customer demand, asset usability or disruption to operations. Ask whether sector-level assumptions are sufficiently sensitive to differences between borrowers. Review the quality and limitations of available data and the treatment of estimates where direct information is incomplete.
Translate scenarios into banking choices
Challenge how scenario analysis informs actual decisions about pricing, tenor, collateral, concentration and client engagement. Assess whether commitments made externally are consistent with product strategy and operational capability. Ensure the board understands the risk of withdrawing from a segment as well as the risk of continuing without adaptation.
The director should seek evidence that analysis is influencing credit processes and monitoring, rather than becoming a separate reporting exercise. Oversight must also consider the interaction with existing financial pressures that may amplify or mask emerging exposure.
Oversight of commitments and uncertainty
This seat contributes to collective oversight of strategy, risk appetite and reporting. The director will not become a specialist credit analyst for individual exposures, but must ensure that material assumptions and limitations are visible in the decisions the board makes.
The director will support informed strategy, scrutinise material commitments and follow progress against agreed actions. Appointment-specific eligibility, independence and approvals will be assessed. Management remains responsible for underwriting and implementation. Success is a board that can explain how emerging exposures affect current choices, what remains uncertain and how the institution will improve its understanding without presenting uncertain long-term projections as established facts.

Before you apply — Portugal
No nationality or residency test applies to a director of a Portuguese company. What shapes a seat is the governance model the company has chosen and the 33.3% requirement on each body.
- Residency test
- None.
- Nationality test
- None.
- Work authorisation
- A non-executive director attending board meetings does not need Portuguese work authorisation. Executive roles for non-EU nationals require a residence permit.
- Tenure limit once appointed
- Twelve years under the IPCG Code — service in any corporate body of the company, continuous or intermittent, counts towards it. The statutory test for supervisory-body members is stricter: re-election for more than two terms defeats independence.
