The problem this seat exists to solve
Applicants should have led a country business, joint operating arrangement or substantial partner-dependent operation. Demonstrate experience maintaining commercial relationships while insisting on clear responsibilities and evidence of performance.
Candidate experience in partner-dependent operations
The role requires financial judgement and the ability to distinguish a genuine partnership constraint from weak internal execution. Explain an occasion when goodwill between senior leaders concealed an unsustainable working arrangement, and how you corrected it. Candidates must be able to work across cultures without relying on broad assumptions about local business behaviour.
Translate the agreement into executable joint work
Lead country execution where the business depends on local commercial or operating partners. The general manager will turn partnership expectations into a functioning division of work, clear customer ownership and dependable financial arrangements. The appointment requires direct responsibility for results rather than relationship management alone.
Trace how opportunities become accepted work, how each party contributes and how service issues are resolved. Identify responsibilities that both parties assume the other will perform. Establish which decisions can be taken locally and which require consent, without allowing routine delivery to become trapped in repeated negotiation.
Set a joint operating review using evidence that both sides can reconcile. Connect customer commitments, capacity, quality, cash and unresolved exceptions. Where a dispute affects current service, organise an interim operating solution while the commercial issue follows its agreed resolution route.
Own the result without losing the partnership evidence
Direct the country team, coordinate partner contributions and manage resources within delegation. Ensure the business retains the knowledge and access needed to serve customers if a partner's support changes. Avoid allowing an essential capability to remain undocumented simply because the relationship is currently constructive.
Bring changes to partnership economics, material obligations or ownership arrangements to the authorised sponsor. Legal and contractual interpretation remains with qualified advisers; the general manager is accountable for translating agreed positions into executable operations.
Leave agreed responsibilities, a credible performance baseline and a clear record of unresolved issues. Establish how new opportunities are assessed so that expansion does not recreate the original ambiguities. The permanent leader should understand both the value of the partnership and the conditions on which that value depends.
Success means dependable customer delivery, fewer recurring disputes over ownership and a country result supported by transparent operating and financial evidence. A cordial relationship without those foundations will not meet the mandate.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Malaysia usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in Malaysia
- A non-executive director attending board meetings does not require an employment pass. Executive and interim operating roles do, and are handled through the Expatriate Services Division or MDEC depending on sector.
