Software engineering organisation in Ireland
The problem this seat exists to solve
The adviser will assess the gap between customer commitments and engineering reliability. The assignment examines how availability promises, release plans, incident response and support arrangements interact. Its purpose is to give leadership a defensible improvement plan and a clearer basis for future commitments, rather than a generic maturity score.
What the reliability engagement should decide
Deliver a service-risk map, prioritised remediation options and a proposed governance route for customer commitments. Include the trade-offs between immediate stabilisation and deeper architectural work. This is an advisory role: engineering management retains release authority and commercial leaders retain contract authority. The adviser must not provide unsupported assurances about availability or security. Recommendations should identify which claims can be evidenced now, which require further testing and which depend on investment or changes in operating practice before they can responsibly be made.
Evidence from incidents and promises
Review service incidents, customer escalations and change history to identify recurring failure mechanisms. Examine whether teams understand the dependencies that determine service health and whether monitoring reveals user impact. Distinguish problems caused by architecture from those caused by unclear ownership, rushed releases or inadequate operational preparation.
Assess how reliability requirements enter product planning and contract review. Identify promises that rely on untested recovery arrangements or external services over which the organisation has limited control. Work with commercial and engineering leaders to describe the operational implications of different service levels and the investment required to support them.
Make corrective work effective
Recommend a proportionate approach to release readiness, incident leadership and learning from failures. Review whether corrective actions are completed and whether they address systemic causes rather than only the last visible error. The adviser should help teams choose a limited set of meaningful measures that reveal improving reliability without discouraging honest incident reporting.
Experience required for credible advice
Candidates need senior engineering or reliability leadership experience in customer-facing software services. They should be able to interpret technical evidence, facilitate difficult cross-functional discussions and make practical recommendations under resource constraints. A record of improving reliability while maintaining product delivery is especially relevant.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Ireland. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
