Software engineering organisation in Spain
The problem this seat exists to solve
Candidates should have personally led engineering growth and be able to discuss the mistakes and corrective decisions involved. They need practical understanding of software delivery, organisational design and leadership development. Experience advising executives is useful, but recommendations must be grounded in operational consequences rather than presentation frameworks.
The advisory outcome management will own
Deliver a diagnosis of constraints, a recommended organisation design and a staged implementation plan with observable review points. Include decision rights, interfaces between teams and changes needed in planning or performance measures. This is advisory work without line-management authority or responsibility for individual employment decisions. Leadership retains ownership of the final design and implementation. The adviser should leave managers able to explain why the chosen structure exists, what trade-offs it accepts and how they will recognise when it no longer serves the work.
Grow capacity without multiplying coordination failure
The adviser will help leadership design the next stage of an engineering organisation's growth. The assignment concerns how teams own outcomes, how decisions move and how specialist expertise is shared as the organisation becomes more complex. Recruiting additional engineers is not the starting assumption; the work must first establish what currently constrains delivery.
Examine the relationship between products, team boundaries and technical dependencies. Identify where work queues form, where decisions repeatedly escalate and where unclear ownership creates rework. Review the balance between local autonomy and shared standards, including security, reliability and architectural decisions whose consequences extend beyond a single team.
Design choices to resolve
Develop options for team structure, engineering management, technical leadership and platform support. Each option should explain the problem it addresses, the coordination cost it introduces and the conditions under which it should be reconsidered. Avoid imposing a fashionable organisational model without testing it against the product and people context.
Hiring capacity includes onboarding and leadership
Assess hiring priorities alongside onboarding capacity, management spans and internal development. A rapid increase in headcount can reduce short-term output if experienced engineers become full-time coordinators. Help leadership define a sequence that protects delivery while building future capacity and provides clear progression for both technical and management careers.

Before you apply — an advisory engagement
No office of director, and no appointment formalities.
An advisory engagement creates no directorship in Spain. There is no registry filing, no regulator pre-approval, no residency arithmetic and no statutory director liability — which is why it is so often the right first step into a market you do not yet know.
- On this brief
- Independence
- Where the engagement specifies independence from any search that follows, that is a requirement of the engagement rather than a courtesy — an adviser to a board is not a candidate for it.
