Restructuring and turnaround organisation in Spain

The problem this seat exists to solve

The interim director will lead implementation of a restructuring plan across finance, operations and other accountable functions. The mandate is to ensure that negotiated commitments, board decisions and operating actions remain consistent as the plan moves into delivery.

A recovery plan translated into obligations

Build a clear register of milestones, funding conditions, operating actions and reporting requirements. Identify dependencies and distinguish fixed obligations from management targets. Establish who has authority to approve changes and what evidence is required before a milestone is reported complete.

Control delivery through evidence of execution

Coordinate workstream leaders, resolve cross-functional obstacles and escalate decisions that cannot be made within delegated authority. Maintain one account of progress and variance. Changes in the operating plan must be reflected in the financial forecast and stakeholder reporting rather than tracked in separate versions.

A milestone may be nominally on time while its intended outcome is deteriorating. Ask whether the action still supports the recovery thesis and whether the next dependent step can proceed. Identify repeated slippage that indicates a capability or resource problem rather than accepting a succession of revised dates.

Implementation experience and the permanent handover

Candidates should have led complex restructuring implementation, turnaround programmes or comparable high-consequence transformations. They need financial literacy, operating understanding and the authority to challenge senior workstream owners. Programme administration alone is insufficient; the role requires judgement about recovery dependencies and practical delivery.

The assignment should leave operating leaders able to absorb the remaining commitments into normal management. Define the conditions for closing the implementation office and preserve records of decisions, assumptions and outstanding obligations.

Candidates should explain how they handled a commitment that became impractical after agreement. The director must bring the issue to the appropriate authority with options and consequences, rather than quietly changing the definition of completion. A successful implementation office makes accountability clearer and eventually becomes unnecessary.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Spain usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Spain
A non-executive director attending board meetings requires no authorisation. Executive roles for non-EU nationals require a work and residence permit.
