The problem this seat exists to solve

This interim leader will take responsibility for an engineering function where delivery predictability and team confidence need to be rebuilt. The assignment is to establish what can realistically be delivered, resolve the constraints that prevent it and create a working relationship between engineering and business leadership. The role must balance immediate commitments with the repair of underlying delivery practices.

The leader and the delegated mandate

Candidates need experience recovering engineering delivery in a complex product or service environment. They should demonstrate technical credibility, direct leadership accountability and the ability to rebuild trust after missed commitments. This is not a coaching-only assignment: the appointed leader will make operational decisions within delegated authority and be accountable for their consequences. Major changes to product strategy, employment or investment remain subject to the relevant executive approvals.

Rebuild the delivery plan

Begin by reviewing the active portfolio, outstanding defects, technical dependencies and available capacity. Identify commitments that lack an accountable owner or a plausible delivery path. Agree a short, explicit set of priorities with executive sponsors and communicate what is being paused, why it is being paused and how decisions will be revisited.

Take ownership of engineering planning and delivery routines within the agreed remit. Resolve blocked decisions, improve the quality of work entering teams and ensure progress reporting distinguishes completed, tested capability from work that merely appears busy. Establish a route for engineers to surface concerns early without allowing every uncertainty to become an indefinite delay.

Diagnose leadership and team constraints

Assess leadership roles, team interfaces and essential skills. Where performance problems are organisational, address the system rather than treating every issue as an individual failure. Where individual capability or conduct requires attention, use the organisation's proper management processes and involve the appropriate people leaders.

Permanent ownership after recovery

The engagement should produce a credible roadmap, clearer technical ownership and a permanent leadership team able to sustain delivery discipline. Document residual risks and the investment choices still required. The final handover must explain which improvements are embedded and which depend on continued attention.

Before you apply — this is an executive role

An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Spain usually does not.

This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.

Position in Spain
A non-executive director attending board meetings requires no authorisation. Executive roles for non-EU nationals require a work and residence permit.
