The problem this seat exists to solve
This director will support board scrutiny of how a bank allocates capital across businesses, products and strategic initiatives. The remit requires an integrated view of return, risk, resilience and execution capability. A plan should not be considered attractive solely because it increases revenue or improves a short-term performance measure.
Capital decisions need banking experience
Candidates should have senior banking finance, strategy, risk or general-management experience with responsibility for capital and business performance. They need fluency in bank financial statements and the ability to question return measures whose assumptions materially affect conclusions. Prior board experience is useful where it demonstrates balanced judgement across competing interests.
Applicants should provide evidence of a difficult resource-allocation decision and explain how uncertainty, downside and implementation capacity were considered. Independent challenge and clear communication are essential.
Compare alternatives honestly
Assess the economics of growth proposals after funding, credit, operational and capital costs. Challenge assumptions about customer acquisition, pricing, losses and the time required to reach sustainable performance. Ask whether a proposed initiative depends on capabilities that are not yet established or resources already committed elsewhere.
Review how management evaluates existing businesses whose strategic role differs from their current financial contribution. Examine options to invest, simplify, partner, reduce exposure or exit, including transition costs and customer consequences. Ensure that capital planning reflects plausible stress rather than a single expected path.
Keep the approval under review
The director should help the board maintain discipline after approval. Strategic programmes need explicit measures of progress and conditions for reconsideration, especially when sunk costs make executives reluctant to change course.
The director's role in collective choice
The director will contribute to collective oversight, including challenge of strategic assumptions and the evidence used to compare alternatives. Management owns the planning process and implementation; the board must make informed choices about priorities and acceptable trade-offs.
The director will help ensure that capital decisions are explicit, evidence-based and followed through. Appointment-specific eligibility, independence and applicable approvals will be assessed. The role gives no individual authority to direct business units or approve investments. Success means that the board understands why capital is being committed, what alternatives were considered and what evidence would justify revisiting the decision before financial or operational pressure removes the choice.
