The problem this seat exists to solve
This director will bring enterprise commercial experience to oversight of major bids and complex solution contracts. The board requires assurance that large opportunities are evaluated for deliverability, cash requirements and risk allocation before competitive pressure turns them into commitments.
Commercial risk before signature
The appointment is non-executive. Management retains ownership of bidding, pricing and negotiation within agreed authority. The director will scrutinise the governance system around material commitments and challenge significant exceptions that come before the board.
Select opportunities worth winning
Assess how opportunity selection incorporates customer credibility, scope clarity, implementation complexity and dependency on partners. Examine whether cost estimates include integration, acceptance testing, support and potential delay. Challenge bids that depend on unapproved product development or assumptions about customer cooperation that the contract does not support.
Late concessions and deadline pressure
Review approval thresholds, escalation quality and the treatment of concessions made late in negotiations. Ask whether commercial, finance, delivery and risk functions have a genuine voice before signature. Ensure the board understands when performance commitments, liability provisions or payment milestones change the economics materially.
Strong financial judgement, calm challenge under deadline pressure and the ability to distinguish strategic investment from disguised underpricing are essential. Previous board work is valuable where it demonstrates independence from executive deal enthusiasm.
Learn from delivery
The director should encourage post-contract learning. Compare bid assumptions with delivery outcomes and identify recurring estimation or incentive problems. Oversight must avoid becoming a slow approval ritual while still protecting the business from commitments it cannot meet profitably.
Qualification and contribution
Applicants should have led complex industrial or enterprise technology sales with responsibility for major contracts and commercial risk. Experience working closely with delivery, finance and legal teams is required. Candidates should be able to discuss both a difficult contract accepted on defensible terms and an opportunity declined for sound reasons.
The board should see material contract risk earlier, receive better explained exceptions and understand whether lessons from delivery are changing bid behaviour. Appointment-specific eligibility and conflicts will be assessed. The director will not act as a bid sponsor or negotiate directly with customers. Success is a commercial governance process that supports worthwhile opportunities while making deliberate, documented choices about the risks accepted.
