The problem this seat exists to solve
The interim chief executive will take operating responsibility for an enterprise requiring a coherent recovery plan. The immediate task is to replace fragmented explanations with an agreed view of performance, cash, customer commitments and delivery capacity. The mandate calls for decisions and execution, including choices that may disappoint stakeholders who have become attached to incompatible priorities.
Establish what is happening before committing to a cure
Start by meeting accountable leaders, testing the reliability of management information and identifying decisions that cannot wait for a complete diagnostic. Protect essential service and financial continuity while distinguishing urgent symptoms from the causes that sustain them.
A mandate with explicit decision rights
Agree delegated authority and escalation routes with the board. Lead the executive team, reset priorities and allocate resources within that authority. Material changes to funding, ownership, major disposals or strategy require the relevant approvals. The interim chief executive must bring those choices forward with options and consequences, rather than seek retrospective approval after commitments have been made.
The work requires a single operating plan that connects commercial priorities, cost, cash and organisational capacity. Establish a limited set of measures that reveal whether recovery is taking hold. Investigate contradictions between reported progress and customer, employee or financial evidence.
Experience needed for the early decisions
Candidates should have held chief executive, managing director or equivalent enterprise accountability through a period of underperformance. They must demonstrate both diagnosis and delivery: identifying the problem is insufficient without evidence that they changed decisions, resources and outcomes. Sector-specific expertise will be assessed against the eventual business context rather than presumed from the title.
The successful leader should be able to explain how they managed uncertainty, retained essential capability and communicated difficult changes without making promises they could not support.
Leave a business that can be led normally
The assignment should conclude with clear operating responsibilities, a credible financial outlook and an executive team able to maintain the recovery disciplines. Document unresolved risks and decisions for the permanent leader. Success is not a temporarily improved report achieved by delaying obligations or exhausting staff; it is a more stable enterprise with evidence that its operating model and leadership arrangements can support continued performance after the interim leaves.

Before you apply — this is an executive role
An interim seat needs work authorisation. A board seat in Denmark usually does not.
This is the single most common way a cross-border interim engagement falls apart after it has been agreed. The visa-free position that applies to a non-executive director attending board meetings does not extend to an executive or operating role.
- Position in Denmark
- A non-executive director attending board meetings requires no permit. Executive roles for non-EU/EEA nationals require a residence and work permit.
